Chapter 11: The Father I Forgot
I stood at the top of the stairs.
For twenty years, I believed my father was dead.
I had mourned him.
I had accepted the empty space he left behind.
I had carried memories of a man who was gone.
But now he was standing downstairs.
Alive.
Waiting.
“Darius.””
The voice came again.
Older.
Deeper.
Calm.
Like he knew exactly what was happening.
I slowly walked down.
Calvin followed.
Monique stayed behind with the girls.
I reached the living room.
And there he was.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Straight posture.
Cold eyes.
The same eyes I saw every morning when I looked in the mirror.
My father.
He looked at me.
Not like a stranger.
Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
“You look like you don’t know me.””
I stared.
“I don’t.””
A small smile crossed his face.
“That’s unfortunate.””
I felt anger rising.
“You disappeared.””
“No.””
He looked around the house.
“I stayed away.””
“You let me think you were dead.””
“I let you survive.””
I laughed.
“Survive?””
I stepped closer.
“You took my daughter.””
His expression didn’t change.
“I saved her.””
My fists tightened.
“Don’t say that.””
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the stairs.
“My daughter lived behind a wall.””
His face changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Regret.
“You found her.””
“Yes.””
He looked toward the ceiling.
“Then it’s already too late.””
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted answers more.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because you weren’t ready.””
“For what?””
“The truth.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I stepped forward.
“My whole life has been built on lies.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Your whole life was built on a decision you made.””
The words hit me.
Again.
“You’re saying I chose this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His face became serious.
“Because Zoe was in danger.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“She was a baby.””
“And you loved her.””
“Then why hide her?””
He was quiet.
Then he said:
“Because you asked me to.””
The room became silent.
I felt sick.
“No.””
“You don’t remember.””
“I would remember asking my father to hide my child.””
He looked at me sadly.
“Would you remember if forgetting was the only way you could live?””
I stared.
“What did you do to me?””
His eyes moved away.
“I didn’t do anything.””
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was broken by Monique.
She came down the stairs.
“You need to tell him.””
My father looked at her.
“You still blame me.””
“You should be blamed.””
I turned.
“You two know each other?””
Monique looked at him.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“How?””
“He was there.””
My father closed his eyes.
“Monique.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“After everything, he deserves the truth.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Monique took a breath.
“After your accident, your father offered to help.””
“And?””
“He convinced you that Zoe was safer away from you.””
I looked at my father.
“Why would I believe that?””
Monique’s voice broke.
“Because someone was trying to kill her.””
The room froze.
Ava appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Kill?””
Monique immediately turned.
“Ava, go back upstairs.””
But it was too late.
The word was already in the room.
My father looked at Zoe.
“She was never the target.””
I stared.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“You were.””
A cold silence filled the house.
“What are you talking about?””
My father walked closer.
“The accident wasn’t an accident.””
My heart stopped.
“You’re saying someone tried to hurt me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
He looked at Monique.
Then Calvin.
Then Zoe.
Finally, he looked back at me.
“The person who has been controlling this entire story.””
I waited.
May you like
He whispered:
“The person you trusted most.””
