Chapter 10: The Room Behind the Library Wall

The sound of the lock releasing echoed through the mansion.

A quiet click.

A small sound.

But everyone heard it.

Because nobody in that room was supposed to know that door existed.

Evelyn walked toward the library without saying another word.

I followed close behind her, keeping Ava beside me.

Richard stayed several steps back.

For the first time since I had met him, he wasn’t leading.

He wasn’t commanding.

He was following.

The library was one of the oldest rooms in the mansion.

Dark wooden shelves covered every wall.

Thousands of books.

Family portraits.

A fireplace that had not been used in years.

I had cleaned that room hundreds of times.

I had dusted every shelf.

Polished every surface.

But I had never noticed anything unusual.

Evelyn walked to the far wall.

She ran her fingers along the wooden panels.

Then stopped.

“There.””

Everyone looked.

I frowned.

“There what?””

She pressed a small section of the wall.

A hidden mechanism clicked.

The entire bookshelf shifted.

Slowly.

Silently.

A narrow doorway appeared behind it.

Ava grabbed my hand.

“Mom…”

“I’m here.””

Evelyn looked at Richard.

“You knew about this.””

Richard swallowed.

“I knew there was a room.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His silence answered.

Evelyn stepped inside.

The lights turned on automatically.

The room was smaller than I expected.

But it was filled with things that clearly mattered.

Old documents.

Family records.

Photographs.

A locked cabinet.

And in the center of the room was a large wooden desk.

On top sat a single envelope.

With Evelyn’s name written across it.

She stopped breathing for a second.

I noticed.

“Mrs. Hawthorne?””

She reached for it slowly.

“I wrote this.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn stared at the handwriting.

“I wrote this letter twenty-five years ago.””

Richard moved closer.

“What are you talking about?””

She opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

She read silently.

Then her expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“What does it say?”” Martin asked.

Evelyn folded the paper.

“It says I made a mistake.””

Richard laughed.

“There it is.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped into the room.

“The truth.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

His voice became louder.

“You spent years pretending I was the problem.””

He pointed at the letter.

“But you admit it now.””

“Richard.””

“You made choices.””

“Yes.””

She looked at him.

“I did.””

For a moment, he looked satisfied.

Like he had finally found something to use against her.

Then Evelyn continued.

“And I have spent twenty-five years trying to correct them.””

His smile disappeared.

Martin walked toward the desk.

“What else is in here?””

Evelyn opened the cabinet.

Inside were dozens of folders.

One caught her attention immediately.

She pulled it out.

The label read:

*RICHARD HAWTHORNE — GUARDIANSHIP RECORDS*

Richard froze.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Now you know.””

I looked between them.

“Guardianship?””

Richard’s face changed.

The confidence disappeared.

“I don’t understand.””

Evelyn opened the folder.

“You were never supposed to control this estate.””

Richard shook his head.

“That’s not possible.””

“You were given temporary authority.””

“For what?””

“Because I believed you were not ready.””

The room became silent.

Richard stared.

“You made me temporary?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

His anger exploded.

“You let me believe I owned everything!””

Evelyn’s voice remained calm.

“I let you believe you had the responsibility to protect it.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Same thing.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“That was your mistake.””

Ava looked confused.

I leaned closer.

“Mrs. Hawthorne…”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Richard was never the owner.””

She looked around the hidden room.

“He was a caretaker.””

Richard stepped backward.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re lying.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“The original ownership documents are here.””

She pulled out another folder.

“The estate was placed under a family trust.””

Richard stared at the papers.

“No.””

“And the final beneficiary…”

She stopped.

Her eyes moved toward Ava.

My heart skipped.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at my daughter.

Then back at Richard.

“The final beneficiary was supposed to be protected by someone who would put family before power.””

Richard’s face went pale.

“No.””

He said it again.

But this time, it wasn’t anger.

It was fear.

Martin took the documents.

“I need to review this.””

Richard suddenly grabbed the folder.

Everyone reacted.

“Richard!””

He pulled it close.

“No one takes anything.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“You’re proving exactly why I made that decision.””

His hand loosened.

Only slightly.

Then a sound came from outside.

A phone ringing.

Not Richard’s.

Not Martin’s.

A different phone.

Everyone looked around.

The sound came from inside the hidden room.

Evelyn opened a drawer.

Inside was an old phone.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

May you like

*Claire Bennett.*

Richard stopped breathing.
