Chapter 12: The Secret Ava Was Never Supposed to Know

The footsteps stopped outside the hidden room.

Nobody moved.

Everyone waited.

Evelyn stood in front of Ava.

Protective.

Ready.

Richard looked toward the doorway.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Then the door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Wearing a simple coat.

Her gray hair pulled back.

Her eyes immediately found Evelyn.

Then Ava.

“Claire.””

Evelyn whispered the name.

The woman nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

Richard stared.

“You came here?””

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you lost control.””

His face hardened.

“You betrayed me.””

Claire looked disappointed.

“No, Richard.””

She stepped inside.

“I stopped protecting your lies.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“You knew about Ava.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

Claire looked at the little girl.

Ava looked frightened.

I crouched beside her.

“You don’t have to listen if you don’t want to.””

But Ava looked up.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“I want to know.””

That broke my heart.

Because she should have been worrying about cartoons.

School.

Friends.

Not secrets buried inside a mansion.

Claire took a breath.

“Twenty-five years ago, Evelyn made a decision.””

Evelyn looked down.

“One I regret.””

Claire nodded.

“You had just lost someone important.””

Evelyn’s eyes became wet.

“I remember.””

Richard interrupted.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at him.

“No one needs to hear this.””

Claire faced him.

“You’re wrong.””

Richard’s voice became angry.

“You think telling her fixes everything?””

“No.””

Claire looked at Ava.

“But she deserves the truth.””

Evelyn held Ava’s hand.

“Continue.””

Claire nodded.

“When Richard was given control of the estate, he was supposed to protect a family secret.””

“What secret?”” I asked.

Claire looked at Ava.

“The secret was that this mansion was never just property.””

She paused.

“It was a promise.””

Evelyn looked at Ava.

“A promise to who?””

Claire answered:

“To a child.””

Silence.

I frowned.

“What child?””

Claire’s eyes moved to Ava.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

Evelyn whispered:

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Ava looked between them.

“Why are you looking at me?””

Nobody answered.

I stepped forward.

“Claire.””

The woman looked at me.

“Tell me.””

Her eyes softened.

“Ava was the reason the trust was created.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

Richard looked away.

Claire continued.

“Twenty-five years ago, Evelyn discovered that someone in the family had tried to erase a child’s existence.””

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“I thought I had lost her.””

Ava looked confused.

“Lost who?””

Claire looked at Evelyn.

And Evelyn finally said the words.

“The daughter I never knew I had.””

Nobody moved.

The room felt frozen.

I looked at Ava.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at Richard.

“What does Ava have to do with this?””

Claire answered.

“She is connected to the family.””

Richard suddenly spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“No. This isn’t happening.””

Evelyn stared.

“Why are you afraid?””

Richard’s eyes were filled with panic.

Because the truth was finally catching him.

Claire stepped closer.

“Ava’s existence changes everything.””

Richard shook his head.

“She can’t inherit.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“There it is.””

The room went silent.

Richard realized what he had revealed.

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“You weren’t afraid of a child.””

She stepped closer.

“You were afraid of losing control.””

Richard said nothing.

Because she was right.

Martin looked at the documents again.

“Mrs. Hawthorne…”

“Yes?””

“If Ava is the beneficiary…”

He paused.

Evelyn understood.

“The ownership transfer was never possible.””

Richard stared.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You built your entire life on something you never owned.””

Richard’s face twisted.

Then his phone rang.

Again.

This time, he answered immediately.

“What?””

A voice came through.

Richard listened.

Then his expression changed.

“What do you mean she escaped?””

Everyone froze.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Who are you talking about?””

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

His eyes moved toward Ava.

May you like

And he whispered:

“The person who knows the whole truth is coming here.””
