Chapter 6: The Stranger With the Evidence
Richard walked out of the office like he had already won.
That scared me more than his anger.
A man who knows he is losing fights desperately.
A man who thinks he is winning becomes dangerous.
Evelyn followed him downstairs.
“Richard.””
He didn’t stop.
“You wanted answers.””
He turned at the bottom of the stairs.
“You’re going to get them.””
The kitchen was still exactly as we had left it.
The pet bowl remained on the counter.
A reminder.
A piece of evidence.
Something Richard couldn’t erase.
He looked at it.
Then looked away.
I noticed.
He hated seeing it.
Not because he regretted it.
Because it represented the moment he lost control.
Ava stayed close to me.
Evelyn stood beside us.
The mansion staff gathered quietly in the hallway.
Everyone wanted to know the truth.
Everyone had questions.
Then the front door opened.
A man entered carrying a leather briefcase.
He was probably in his fifties.
Gray suit.
Glasses.
Calm expression.
Richard smiled.
“Finally.””
The man nodded.
“Mr. Hawthorne.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“Who are you?””
The man turned.
“Martin Cole.””
He opened the briefcase.
“I represent the Hawthorne estate.””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“Yes.””
Martin placed a folder on the table.
“I was contacted regarding a dispute over property ownership.””
Evelyn didn’t touch the folder.
“By whom?””
Martin looked at Richard.
“Your son.””
Richard crossed his arms.
“Go ahead.””
The lawyer opened the folder.
“The documents show that Mrs. Evelyn Hawthorne transferred ownership of the mansion and several assets to Richard Hawthorne six years ago.””
Evelyn stared.
“That document is fake.””
Martin remained calm.
“That is what you claim.””
Richard smiled.
“Careful, Mom.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You forged my signature.””
“And you have to prove it.””
The confidence in his voice returned.
He looked around the room.
“At the end of the day, paperwork matters.””
I felt anger rise in me.
“You think paperwork excuses what you did?””
Richard looked at me.
“You’re just the house manager.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I’m the mother of the child you humiliated.””
Ava squeezed my hand.
Richard looked away.
Martin closed the folder.
“This will likely become a legal matter.””
Evelyn nodded.
“It will.””
Richard smiled.
“Good.””
He walked toward the kitchen island.
“You know what everyone forgets?””
He picked up the ownership papers.
“They remember you as powerful.””
He tapped the document.
“But power means nothing without proof.””
Evelyn watched him.
“Are you finished?””
Richard smiled.
“Almost.””
He looked at Ava.
“Because I think there are other people who need to understand their place.””
My entire body went tense.
Before I could speak, Evelyn moved.
Fast.
She stepped between him and Ava.
“Try that again.””
Richard stopped.
The room went silent.
Evelyn’s voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“And this time, understand that I am not your mother standing in front of you.””
Richard stared.
“I am the woman whose name built everything you are standing on.””
For a second, his confidence disappeared.
Then Martin’s phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Richard noticed.
“What is it?””
Martin didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at Evelyn.
Then at the document.
Then back at Richard.
“There’s a problem.””
Richard frowned.
“What problem?””
Martin slowly removed his glasses.
“The ownership transfer document you gave me…”
He looked directly at Richard.
“Was never filed.””
Richard froze.
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you say?””
Martin opened the folder again.
“The document exists.””
A pause.
“But legally…”
He looked at Richard.
“It means nothing.””
Richard’s face went pale.
Because his last defense had just collapsed.
But then Martin pulled out another envelope.
One Evelyn had not seen before.
“There is something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
Martin placed the envelope on the table.
“This was delivered to my office this morning.””
Evelyn stared.
“By whom?””
Martin hesitated.
May you like
Then answered:
“Someone who said Richard was never the only person hiding the truth.””
