Chapter 9: The Person Watching From the Shadows

The kitchen changed instantly.

The argument.

The documents.

The secrets.

None of it mattered anymore.

Because someone had been watching.

Someone had been close enough to photograph my daughter inside the mansion.

Ava pressed against my side.

“Mom?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Yes, baby?””

“Who took that picture?””

I looked at the screen.

I didn’t have an answer.

And that scared me.

Evelyn took the phone from my hand.

Her expression turned cold.

“Richard.””

He looked at her.

“I don’t know anything.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Someone sent a picture of my granddaughter from inside my home.””

Richard swallowed.

“Maybe it was one of your employees.””

The hallway immediately filled with uncomfortable silence.

Because everyone understood what he was doing.

Blaming someone else.

Again.

I looked at him.

“You think one of the workers would do that?””

Richard shrugged.

“I think people do desperate things.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Like you?””

He looked away.

The question landed.

Martin examined the photograph.

“The metadata is still attached.””

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

“It means we may be able to identify when and where it was taken.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Do it.””

Martin connected the phone.

Everyone waited.

Seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

“That’s strange.””

“What?”” Evelyn asked.

“The image was taken from a device connected to this property.””

My stomach tightened.

“So someone here took it?””

Martin nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard looked around.

“See? It’s probably an employee.””

But Martin shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The device ID is registered to a personal phone.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“Whose?””

Martin looked at the screen.

Then at Richard.

“Richard Hawthorne.””

The room went silent.

Richard stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“You said you didn’t know anything about the photo.””

“I don’t.””

Martin held up the phone.

“The photo was sent from your account.””

Richard stepped back.

“No.””

I watched his face.

He wasn’t pretending anymore.

He was genuinely shocked.

Which meant something else was happening.

Something bigger.

Evelyn noticed too.

“Richard.””

He looked at her.

“I swear I didn’t send that.””

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because I trusted him.

I didn’t.

But because his fear looked real.

Evelyn took the phone.

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

The mansion suddenly felt too large.

Too many rooms.

Too many doors.

Too many places for someone to hide.

Ava whispered:

“Mom, can we leave?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

But before we could move, the security alarm sounded.

A loud noise echoed through the entire house.

Everyone froze.

Martin looked toward the entrance.

“That’s the internal security system.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

“Why is it activated?””

Richard looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

The alarm continued.

Then the main security panel flashed.

A message appeared.

*UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.*

Everyone stared.

Then another message appeared.

*PRIVATE ARCHIVE OPENED.*

Evelyn went completely still.

“What archive?””

Nobody answered.

Richard looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw something different in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You knew,” Evelyn whispered.

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

“You knew there was an archive.””

“No.””

But his voice betrayed him.

Evelyn walked toward the hallway.

“Where is it?””

Richard didn’t move.

“Mom.””

“Where is it?””

He looked at the floor.

Then quietly said:

“Behind the library wall.””

Evelyn stopped.

The mansion became silent again.

Because suddenly we all understood.

The documents.

The money.

The lies.

They were never the biggest secret.

Richard had been protecting something hidden inside the house.

And now someone had opened it.

Someone who knew exactly where to look.

Evelyn turned toward the library.

“Nia.””

“Yes?””

“Take Ava and stay behind me.””

My heart raced.

“What’s in there?””

Evelyn looked at the dark hallway.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“The truth about why Richard was never supposed to inherit anything.””

May you like

And from somewhere deep inside the mansion…

A door unlocked.
