Chapter 13: The Woman From the Past

The words left Richard’s mouth, and nobody moved.

“The person who knows the whole truth is coming here.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That was when I realized something.

For the first time all day, Richard wasn’t afraid of being caught.

He was afraid of someone else arriving.

Someone who had power over him.

Someone who knew what he had done before anyone else did.

Claire looked toward the hallway.

Her face changed.

“She’s here.””

The mansion became silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence where every person in the room knows something important is about to happen.

Ava held my hand.

I could feel her shaking.

I leaned down.

“Stay close to me.””

She nodded.

The footsteps approached.

Slow.

Measured.

Not rushed.

Whoever was coming wasn’t afraid.

Then a woman appeared in the doorway.

She looked to be in her late fifties.

Dark coat.

Short silver hair.

A calm expression.

But her eyes carried years of pain.

Evelyn froze.

“No.””

The woman looked at her.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

Richard stepped backward.

“Margaret.””

I looked between them.

Another name.

Another secret.

Evelyn’s face changed completely.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Shock.

“How are you here?””

Margaret gave a small, sad smile.

“Because hiding stopped protecting anyone.””

Claire moved closer to her.

“You came.””

Margaret nodded.

“I should have come years ago.””

Richard looked furious.

“You don’t belong here.””

Margaret turned toward him.

And the calm in her face disappeared.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

The room went still.

Richard had spent years controlling people with his voice.

But this woman didn’t react to him at all.

Evelyn looked at Margaret.

“Tell me the truth.””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“I will.””

She looked at Ava.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

Ava frowned.

“Why are you sorry?””

Margaret’s eyes filled slightly.

“Because your whole life has been shaped by secrets adults were too afraid to face.””

I stepped forward.

“What is your connection to my daughter?””

Margaret looked at Ava.

Then answered:

“I’m her grandmother.””

My entire body went cold.

Ava blinked.

“What?””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“That’s impossible.””

Margaret looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“It’s the one thing you were never able to erase.””

Evelyn looked overwhelmed.

“Explain.””

Margaret took a breath.

“Twenty-five years ago, Evelyn’s daughter gave birth to a baby girl.””

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn whispered:

“My daughter…”

“Yes.””

Margaret looked at Ava.

“She disappeared after giving birth.””

Ava looked confused.

“But I don’t understand.””

Margaret knelt slowly.

“You were hidden because someone wanted you gone.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“That’s a lie.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You helped make it happen.””

The accusation hit the room.

Evelyn turned sharply.

“Richard?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Margaret continued.

“You found out about the child before Evelyn did.””

Richard said nothing.

“You knew that if Ava was found, the trust would activate.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“The trust…”

Margaret nodded.

“The trust was created to protect Ava’s future.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“So what?””

Everyone looked at him.

The coldness in his voice was terrifying.

“So what?””

He laughed.

“She was a baby.””

Margaret stared.

“She was a person.””

“She was a problem.””

Ava flinched.

I immediately pulled her closer.

Evelyn’s expression turned furious.

“Enough.””

Richard looked at his mother.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“I understand everything now.””

Richard shook his head.

“You built this entire family around a child who wasn’t even supposed to exist.””

Margaret’s face hardened.

“She existed.””

“And because of her, I lost everything.””

Evelyn stared.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You lost everything because you believed everything belonged to you.””

Richard looked away.

Martin opened the documents.

“There’s something else.””

Nobody moved.

He pulled out a final page.

“The trust agreement names a guardian.””

Evelyn looked.

“Who?””

Martin read.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

“Mrs. Hawthorne…”

“Who?””

He looked at Ava.

“The guardian was never Richard.””

Richard froze.

“Then who?””

Martin turned the paper.

“The person chosen was Nia.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Everyone looked at me.

I shook my head.

“No. That’s impossible.””

Evelyn looked at the document.

“My daughter chose her.””

I stared.

“I never met your daughter.””

Margaret looked at me.

“Yes, you did.””

I felt confused.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“She knew you.””

“How?””

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Because before she disappeared, she worked in this mansion.””

The room spun.

I looked around.

The walls.

The hallway.

The kitchen.

The place where I had spent years working.

But suddenly it felt like I had never truly known it.

Richard stared at me.

“You.””

For the first time, he looked afraid of me.

Not because I had power.

Because I was connected to something he had tried to destroy.

Evelyn whispered:

“Nia…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She held the document.

“Your full name.””

I frowned.

“Nia Carter.””

Her eyes widened.

“Carter.””

Margaret nodded.

“She was her daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Because suddenly the secret wasn’t only about Ava.

It was about me.
