Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

Nobody touched the phone.

The name on the screen seemed impossible.

Claire Bennett.

The woman from the photograph.

The woman connected to the hidden money.

The woman who somehow knew secrets buried inside the Hawthorne family.

The phone continued ringing.

Evelyn looked at Richard.

“Answer it.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

That was the first honest thing he had said all day.

Evelyn picked up the phone.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But steady.

“Evelyn.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Claire.””

Richard looked like he had seen a ghost.

“You’re alive.””

The voice on the phone paused.

“Yes, Richard.””

Nobody spoke.

Claire continued.

“I’m sorry it took me this long.””

Evelyn held the phone tighter.

“Where have you been?””

“Trying to fix what I helped create.””

Richard stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Claire ignored him.

“Evelyn, you need to listen carefully.””

“I’m listening.””

“The documents in that room are real.””

Evelyn looked down.

“I know.””

“No.””

Claire’s voice became urgent.

“You don’t know everything.””

The room went still.

Richard looked nervous.

“What else is there?””

Claire answered.

“Richard was never the only person who altered those records.””

Evelyn frowned.

“What?””

“I helped him.””

Richard looked shocked.

“You?””

“Yes.””

The admission stunned everyone.

I looked at Evelyn.

Her face was unreadable.

“Why?””

Claire was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because I believed I was protecting someone.””

Richard laughed.

“Protecting me?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Everyone froze.

Claire continued.

“I was protecting Ava.””

My body went cold.

Ava looked at me.

“Me?””

I wrapped my arm around her.

“Stay with me.””

Richard stared at the phone.

“What does Ava have to do with this?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Evelyn did.

“Richard.””

Her voice changed.

“What?””

“Why were you so afraid of her?””

Richard looked away.

“I wasn’t.””

“Yes, you were.””

She looked at Ava.

“You weren’t punishing her for stealing food.””

Richard said nothing.

“You were afraid of what she might discover.””

His face hardened.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Claire spoke again.

“She already discovered it.””

Everyone looked at Ava.

The little girl looked confused.

“What did I discover?””

Claire’s voice softened.

“The truth about your grandmother.””

Evelyn stared.

“What are you talking about?””

There was a long pause.

Then Claire said:

“Evelyn, you need to tell her.””

Evelyn looked shaken.

“I thought nobody knew.””

“I knew.””

“Richard knew?””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Richard’s expression changed.

Like he was realizing something.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“What?””

Richard stepped backward.

“No.””

“Richard?””

He looked at Ava.

Then at the phone.

Then at the documents.

“You knew.””

Claire didn’t respond.

“You knew she was…”

He stopped.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“Was what?””

Richard closed his mouth.

Too late.

Everyone had heard.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What were you going to say?””

Richard looked at me.

Then at Ava.

And for once…

He looked afraid of a child.

Claire spoke quietly.

“Richard, it’s time.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Tell her.””

“No.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Tell me what?””

Richard’s face twisted.

“You don’t want to know.””

Evelyn stared.

“I spent twenty-five years looking for the truth.””

She took Ava’s hand.

“Now I’m ready.””

Richard looked at Ava.

Then whispered:

“She isn’t who you think she is.””

The words hung in the room.

Ava’s face fell.

I pulled her closer.

Evelyn’s expression turned furious.

“Explain.””

Richard opened his mouth.

But before he could speak…

The phone went dead.

The hidden room lights flickered.

May you like

And from the hallway outside came a sound.

Someone running.
