Chapter 7: The Envelope That Changed Everything

The envelope sat on the kitchen table like a warning.

Nobody touched it.

Not Richard.

Not Evelyn.

Not Martin.

Not even me.

After everything that had happened, I thought I had already seen the worst side of Richard Hawthorne.

I was wrong.

Because the scariest thing about Richard was not what he had done.

It was how desperately he wanted to keep doing it.

He stared at the envelope as if it was a snake waiting to bite him.

“Who sent that?”” he asked.

Martin looked at him.

“I can’t disclose that yet.””

Richard laughed.

“You’re kidding.””

“No.””

“You walk into my house with a mysterious envelope and expect everyone to believe you?””

Martin remained calm.

“It was sent with instructions to be opened in front of Evelyn Hawthorne.””

Everyone looked at Evelyn.

She didn’t move.

“Open it.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

The single word shocked everyone.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

“No?””

Richard realized his mistake.

He tried to recover.

“I mean… we should have legal counsel present.””

Martin looked at him.

“You just requested legal counsel while objecting to evidence being reviewed?””

Richard’s mouth closed.

He had no answer.

Evelyn reached for the envelope.

Her hands were steady.

But I noticed something.

Her fingers tightened slightly before she opened it.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Like a part of her already knew what was inside.

She pulled out several documents.

The first page.

Then the second.

Then a photograph.

Her expression changed.

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

Richard looked nervous.

“What did you find?””

Evelyn slowly placed the photograph on the table.

It was old.

A younger Evelyn stood beside Richard when he was a teenager.

Beside them was another woman.

Someone I had never seen before.

Richard stared at the picture.

And all the color drained from his face.

“Where did you get that?””

Martin looked at him.

“So you recognize her.””

Richard didn’t respond.

Evelyn picked up the photo.

“Who is she?””

Richard looked away.

“Someone from the past.””

“That is not an answer.””

The room became tense.

Ava leaned against me.

I whispered:

“Do you know who she is?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Martin opened the folder.

“The woman’s name is Claire Bennett.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at him.

Martin continued anyway.

“She worked with the Hawthorne family twenty-five years ago.””

Evelyn frowned.

“I don’t remember her.””

“That is because her employment records were removed.””

Richard’s face changed.

Again.

That same panic.

That same fear.

Evelyn noticed.

“What did you do?””

Richard ran a hand through his hair.

“This is ridiculous.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice became colder.

“This is a question.””

She held up the photograph.

“Who is Claire Bennett?””

Richard stared at the floor.

For a moment, I thought he might finally tell the truth.

Then he did what he always did.

He attacked.

“You want to know why I’m like this?””

Evelyn looked confused.

“What?””

“You want to know why I stopped trusting everyone?””

“This is not about trust.””

“Yes, it is.””

Richard pointed around the room.

“You all think I’m the villain.””

Nobody answered.

“Maybe I am.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“But nobody ever asks why.””

I looked at Ava.

Even she understood.

This was not an apology.

It was an attempt to make himself the victim.

Evelyn didn’t fall for it.

“Your childhood does not explain why you hurt an innocent child.””

Richard looked at Ava.

For half a second, something almost human crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Evelyn stared.

“No.””

She looked down at the documents.

“But I’m about to.””

She turned the page.

Then froze.

“What is this?””

Martin stepped closer.

“Those are financial records.””

Evelyn scanned them.

Her expression became unreadable.

Richard looked uneasy.

“What records?””

Martin answered.

“Payments.””

“From who?””

Martin looked at Evelyn.

“To Richard.””

A silence fell.

Evelyn looked up.

“Who paid you?””

Richard said nothing.

“Richard.””

Still nothing.

The question hung between them.

Then Evelyn saw one final document.

A signature.

A name.

And suddenly she whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She slowly placed the paper down.

Her voice was barely audible.

“The person who funded Richard’s takeover…”

She looked directly at her son.

“Was someone inside this family.””

Richard stepped back.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

May you like

Because whoever had helped him build his lie…

Had just been exposed.
