Chapter 5: The Son Who Wanted Everything

Nobody moved.

The accusation stayed in the room like smoke.

Richard stared at his mother.

Then he laughed.

A weak, nervous laugh.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Evelyn didn’t blink.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

He walked toward the desk.

“You’re accusing me because you’re angry.””

“No.””

She held up the document.

“I’m accusing you because your signature analysis confirms what I already suspected.””

Richard stopped.

For the first time, I saw real panic.

“You had it analyzed?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Of course I did.””

The confidence returned to her voice.

“You thought I was gone. You thought I wasn’t paying attention.””

Richard shook his head.

“This is insane.””

“No.””

Evelyn placed the papers on the desk.

“This is consequences.””

I looked at the documents.

I didn’t understand all the legal words.

But I understood enough.

Richard had been pretending to own something that was never his.

The mansion.

The company.

The power.

All of it.

Ava tugged my sleeve.

“Mom, what does that mean?””

I knelt beside her.

“It means some things aren’t what they seem.””

She looked at Richard.

“Was he lying?””

I didn’t answer.

Because Richard answered for himself.

“You don’t know anything.””

His voice was sharp.

Ava flinched.

Immediately, Evelyn stepped between them.

“Do not speak to her like that.””

Richard looked at his mother.

“She’s just a child.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn’s eyes hardened.

“And unlike you, she deserves protection.””

The words hit him.

Richard’s face turned red.

“I have done everything for this family.””

Evelyn stared.

“You took everything from this family.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then explain.””

Richard paced.

“I kept the business alive.””

“You changed contracts.””

“I made decisions.””

“You transferred money.””

His steps stopped.

Silence.

I looked at him.

Evelyn continued.

“You thought I wouldn’t notice missing funds?””

Richard looked away.

“I was investing.””

“In what?””

No answer.

“Richard.””

Still nothing.

“In what?””

His shoulders dropped slightly.

“Real estate.””

Evelyn laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was disappointed.

“You gambled with my company.””

“I was going to fix it.””

“With what?””

Richard’s eyes moved.

The hesitation told us everything.

Evelyn whispered:

“You weren’t planning to fix anything.””

Richard’s voice became defensive.

“You don’t understand the pressure I was under.””

“Pressure?””

“Yes.””

He pointed around the room.

“Do you know what it’s like being your son?””

Evelyn looked surprised.

Richard continued.

“Everyone compared me to you. Every achievement was yours. Every success belonged to you. I was always just Evelyn Hawthorne’s son.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

I almost felt sympathy.

Almost.

Then I looked at Ava.

The little girl who had been forced to eat from a pet bowl because a grown man felt powerless.

Pain explained behavior.

It did not excuse cruelty.

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“I spent my entire life trying to give you opportunities.””

Richard shook his head.

“You gave me expectations.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I gave you trust.””

The room became quiet.

Then Richard said something that surprised all of us.

“You know what’s funny?””

He smiled.

A bitter smile.

“You think you’re better than me.””

Evelyn frowned.

“What?””

“You think because you built everything, you’re untouchable.””

He stepped closer.

“But you made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“You trusted me.””

A chill moved through me.

Because there was something different in his voice.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Confidence.

Like he still had one card left.

Evelyn noticed too.

“What did you do, Richard?””

He smiled.

“I protected myself.””

The hallway lights flickered slightly.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Richard answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through the speaker.

Richard listened.

Then his expression changed.

A slow smile appeared.

“Good.””

Evelyn watched him.

“Who was that?””

May you like

Richard looked directly at his mother.

“The person who is going to prove this house belongs to me.””
