Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Mansion Doors

The next few minutes felt unreal.

Like I was watching someone else’s life happen from far away.

Evelyn stood in the center of the kitchen, holding her phone in one hand and the metal pet bowl in the other.

Richard looked smaller than I had ever seen him.

Not powerless.

Not yet.

But afraid.

And Richard Hawthorne was never afraid.

Not when employees quit.

Not when people criticized him.

Not when newspapers questioned his decisions.

But now, standing in front of his mother, he looked like a child waiting to be punished.

Evelyn ended the call.

“Interesting,” she said.

Richard forced a smile.

“What was that about?””

She looked at him.

“You tell me.””

The smile disappeared.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

Evelyn placed the bowl on the counter.

“You told the board everything was under control.””

“It is.””

“You told me the staff was happy.””

“They are.””

“You told me Ava was being cared for.””

Richard looked at me.

Then at Ava.

His silence exposed him.

Evelyn’s voice became sharper.

“You lied to me.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Mom, you’re misunderstanding the situation.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

He pointed toward me.

“Nia is emotional. She’s turning this into something it isn’t.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because that was his favorite trick.

Make the person who was hurt look unstable.

Make cruelty look like confusion.

Make the truth seem like an exaggeration.

But Evelyn didn’t look convinced.

“Richard,” she said.

“Yes?””

“Did you put the food in that bowl?””

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

“Yes,” he finally admitted.

Ava gasped softly.

I felt her hand tighten around mine.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

A long silence followed.

Then she asked:

“Why?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Because she needed discipline.””

“She is eight.””

“She needs boundaries.””

“She needed dinner.””

His face hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“No. I understand perfectly.””

Richard shook his head.

“No, you don’t. You weren’t here. You don’t know what happens in this house.””

Evelyn took one step forward.

“This is my house.””

The words landed harder than any scream.

Richard froze.

I watched his expression shift.

Confusion.

Fear.

Denial.

“You gave it to me,” he said.

“No.””

His voice rose.

“You said I could manage everything.””

“I said you could manage the estate.””

Richard laughed nervously.

“That’s the same thing.””

“No, Richard.””

Evelyn looked around the kitchen.

“At some point, you confused responsibility with ownership.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Richard seemed unable to respond.

Ava slowly stepped forward.

Evelyn noticed her.

“My dear,” Evelyn said gently.

Ava looked up.

“Did you ask him for food?””

The little girl nodded.

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Ava looked at Richard.

Her voice trembled.

“He said I was not supposed to eat with the family.””

My heart broke.

Evelyn’s face went still.

“Not supposed to eat with the family?””

Ava nodded.

“He said I was only here because my mom worked here.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“That is not what I said.””

Ava flinched.

Evelyn saw it.

And that was the moment everything changed.

Because Evelyn Hawthorne had built an empire by reading people.

And she had just watched her son reveal exactly who he was.

She walked over to Ava.

Then she did something Richard clearly never expected.

She knelt.

A woman who had commanded boardrooms.

A woman whose signature was worth millions.

She knelt on the marble floor beside a little girl.

“I’m sorry,” Evelyn whispered.

Ava blinked.

“For what?””

“For not seeing this sooner.””

Richard stared.

“Mom.””

Evelyn stood.

“Do not.””

One word.

Two syllables.

But Richard stopped immediately.

I had never heard anyone silence him like that.

Evelyn turned to me.

“Nia, how long has this been happening?””

I looked at Ava.

Then at Richard.

“I don’t know.””

Richard scoffed.

“Exactly.””

I ignored him.

“But I know today was the first time I couldn’t pretend I didn’t see it.””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“You did the right thing.””

Richard laughed.

“The right thing? She called you because she wanted revenge.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I called her because Ava needed someone who could stop you.””

For once, Richard had no response.

Evelyn picked up the bowl again.

Then she looked toward the hallway.

“Bring me the house records.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What records?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at me.

“Nia, where is the original ownership file?””

I frowned.

“I don’t know.””

Richard suddenly looked nervous.

Evelyn noticed.

And so did I.

Because his reaction was immediate.

Too immediate.

She turned back to him.

“You know exactly what I’m asking about.””

Richard stepped backward.

“Mom…”

The hallway lights reflected against the marble floor.

The mansion suddenly felt different.

Like it had been hiding a secret inside its walls.

Evelyn held Richard’s gaze.

“Tell me what you did with the documents.””

Richard said nothing.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked down.

And the color drained from his face.

Because the message on the screen came from a name I had never seen before.

A name connected to the one thing Richard had been hiding from everyone.

The ownership papers.

And beneath the name were five words:

*“She knows everything now, Richard.””*
