Chapter 1: The Moment I Walked In

“Bianca, stop!””

I had never heard my own voice sound like that before.

It wasn’t anger. It was something deeper. Something that came from a place in me that only existed for one person in this world — my five-year-old daughter, Lily.

The first thing I saw when I opened the dining room door was my little girl’s terrified face.

The second thing I saw was the dog bowl.

The large metal bowl sat on the polished wooden floor, filled with wet dog food. The smell hit me instantly, thick and sour, mixing with the expensive candles Bianca always lit before dinner.

And then I saw my wife.

Bianca stood behind Lily, her glittering champagne dress shining under the bright dining room lights as if she were preparing for a luxury party instead of doing something that made my stomach turn.

Her hands were wrapped around Lily’s shoulders.

“Bianca: Eat it!”” she snapped.

Lily cried harder, turning her face away from the bowl.

“No… please,” Lily whispered.

My body moved before my mind caught up.

I crossed the room in seconds.

“What the hell are you doing?!”” I shouted.

Bianca released Lily immediately.

I grabbed my daughter and pulled her into my arms. Her tiny fingers wrapped around my neck so tightly that I could feel her shaking.

“Daddy,” she cried against my shoulder.

I held her close.

“Daddy’s here.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Bianca stared at me like I was the one who had done something wrong.

Then she folded her arms.

“She needed discipline.””

I looked at her.

My wife.

The woman I trusted.

The woman I thought would protect my children when I wasn’t home.

“Discipline?”” I repeated.

Bianca sighed dramatically.

“Marcus, don’t make this bigger than it is. She was being disrespectful.””

I looked down at Lily.

Her cream party dress was stained. Her cheeks were wet with tears. Her little body was still trembling.

“Lily,” I said softly.

“Look at Daddy.””

She slowly lifted her eyes.

“Did Mommy make you do this?””

Her lips shook.

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Daddy… she does this when you leave.””

The room went silent.

I felt my heartbeat pounding in my ears.

Slowly, I turned toward Bianca.

Her expression changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“Lily doesn’t know what she’s saying,” Bianca said quickly.

Behind me, I heard footsteps.

Maya.

My fifteen-year-old daughter stood near the doorway, still wearing her beige school blazer. Her hand was wrapped around her smartphone.

She looked pale.

Like she had been carrying a secret that was too heavy for her.

“Marcus,” Bianca said, stepping forward.

“Your daughters are exaggerating.””

Maya looked down at her phone.

Then back at me.

“Dad…”

Her voice cracked.

I turned.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“I recorded something.””

Bianca immediately looked at her.

“What did you record?””

Maya didn’t answer.

She just held the phone tighter.

I carried Lily to the dining chair and carefully set her beside Maya.

“Stay with your sister,” I told her.

Maya nodded.

I looked at the dog bowl sitting on the floor.

The same bowl I had filled for our dog every morning.

The same bowl that should never have been near my child.

I picked it up.

Bianca’s face changed.

“Marcus…”

Her voice was suddenly softer.

“Don’t.””

I stared at the woman standing in front of me.

The woman who had smiled in family photos.

The woman who told everyone she loved my daughters like they were her own.

I walked toward her.

“Do you know what the worst part is?”” I said.

Bianca stepped backward.

“What?””

“I believed you.””

Her mouth opened.

But before she could answer, I turned the bowl over.

The wet food fell directly onto her head.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Bianca screamed.

“What are you doing?!””

She dropped to her knees, hands shaking as she tried to wipe the food away.

Maya covered Lily’s eyes.

I stood between my daughters and my wife.

And then Maya spoke.

Quietly.

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

“I recorded everything.””

Bianca froze.

Maya raised the phone slightly.

“And this wasn’t the first time.””

Bianca’s face went completely pale.

Then she moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

“DELETE THAT!””

She lunged toward Maya.

I stepped in front of her.

And for the first time in our marriage, Bianca looked at me like she was afraid.

Because she knew.

May you like

Whatever was on that phone…

could destroy everything.
