Chapter 2: The Phone That Changed Everything

The dining room felt smaller than it ever had before.

The same room where we celebrated birthdays.

The same room where we took family photos.

The same room where Bianca always smiled for guests.

Now it felt like a courtroom.

Except there was no judge.

No jury.

Just the truth waiting inside Maya’s phone.

Bianca stood several feet away from us, her expensive dress ruined, her face twisted with anger.

“You’re seriously going to believe a teenager over your wife?”” she asked.

I stared at her.

“I’m going to believe what I saw.””

She laughed.

A cold, uncomfortable laugh.

“You saw one moment.””

“No,” Maya interrupted.

Bianca looked at her.

“You don’t get to talk right now.””

Maya’s fingers tightened around the phone.

I stepped forward.

“She can say whatever she wants.””

Bianca looked at me.

“Marcus, you have no idea what you’re doing.””

I almost couldn’t believe those words came from her.

For years, I worked long hours building my company. I missed dinners. I missed school events. I trusted Bianca because I thought my family was safe with her.

I thought coming home late didn’t matter.

I thought my daughters were loved.

I was wrong.

I looked at Maya.

“How long?””

She hesitated.

“How long have you known?””

Maya looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“A few months.””

My chest tightened.

“A few months?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know what to do.””

Bianca immediately stepped in.

“She’s lying because she’s angry at me.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was small.

But steady.

“You told Lily nobody would believe her.””

The color drained from my face.

I turned slowly toward Bianca.

“What did you say?””

Bianca looked away.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Maya unlocked her phone.

“I saved everything.””

Bianca’s expression changed again.

Not sadness.

Not regret.

Panic.

“You went through my phone?””

Maya frowned.

“It’s my phone.””

“You recorded inside my house?””

“Yes.””

Bianca stared at her.

“You had no right.””

I couldn’t stop myself.

“No right?””

My voice echoed through the room.

“She had no right to protect her sister?””

Bianca said nothing.

I walked toward the table and placed my hand on it.

The silence felt heavy.

“Why, Bianca?””

She looked at me.

“Why would you do this?””

For the first time, her anger cracked.

“She was becoming spoiled.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“Lily gets everything. Everyone protects her. Everyone feels sorry for her.””

I stared at her.

“She’s five years old.””

Bianca shrugged.

“She needs to learn.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You put my daughter’s face near dog food.””

“She wasn’t going to eat it.””

“You don’t know that.””

The room went quiet.

Because she didn’t have an answer.

Lily moved closer to Maya.

I noticed she was still afraid.

Afraid of the woman who was supposed to be her mother.

That hurt more than anything.

Bianca suddenly changed tactics.

She lowered her voice.

“Marcus, we can fix this.””

I looked at her.

“Fix what?””

“This misunderstanding.””

I almost laughed.

“Misunderstanding?””

She stepped closer.

“Think about your reputation. Think about the company. Think about what people will say.””

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not guilt.

Fear of consequences.

Maya looked at me.

“Dad…”

I nodded.

“I know.””

Bianca saw the decision on my face.

And she panicked.

“You’re not taking my children away from me.””

I said nothing.

Because I wasn’t sure what I was going to do yet.

But then Maya unlocked her phone again.

“Dad.””

Her voice was different.

Serious.

“There’s something else.””

Bianca stopped breathing.

“What?””

Maya looked at the screen.

“I found another recording.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

Maya looked at Lily.

“Last week.””

My stomach dropped.

Bianca stepped forward.

“Maya, don’t.””

Maya held the phone behind her.

And whispered:

“Dad… this one is why I started recording.””

I looked at the screen.

I didn’t know what I was about to see.

But I knew one thing.

May you like

Whatever happened next…

would change our family forever.
