Chapter 12: The Man Who Knew Too Much
The next morning, I woke up feeling like I hadn’t slept at all.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same things.
Lily crying.
Maya holding the phone.
Bianca smiling.
Daniel hiding the truth.
My entire life felt like a story someone else had written.
And I was finally reading the pages.
I found Daniel sitting alone in the dining room.
The same room where everything started.
The dog bowl was gone.
But the memory remained.
“You owe me answers.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
I sat across from him.
“No more half-truths.””
“No more.””
I studied his face.
“Who are you?””
He looked down.
“My father worked with yours.””
I said nothing.
“Your father wasn’t just an inventor. He had partners.””
“And yours was one?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Daniel took a breath.
“When your father realized people wanted his research, he trusted very few people.””
“Who?””
“My father.””
I frowned.
“And you?””
Daniel nodded.
“I was young, but I knew enough.””
“How young?””
“Twenty-two.””
I stared.
“You were around when my mother disappeared.””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“Were you involved?””
“No.””
His voice was immediate.
“I swear.””
I watched him carefully.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
“Your mother discovered someone was trying to steal your father’s work.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Ethan.””
My hands tightened.
“He was involved back then?””
“Yes.””
“And Bianca?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She came later.””
I stood.
“Then why did Bianca know about me?””
“Because Ethan found out about the trust.””
“And he needed someone close to me.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I walked away.
The betrayal felt endless.
“So Bianca was sent to marry me.””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was sent to watch.””
I turned.
“What?””
“My father asked me to keep an eye on the situation.””
“You were spying on me?””
“At first.””
The honesty hurt.
“Then what?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Then I saw what Ethan and Bianca were planning.””
“And you waited?””
“I was trying to find proof.””
“You let me marry her.””
His eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Sorry doesn’t give me back eight years.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“But it can help you protect your daughters now.””
I wanted to hate him.
But part of me knew he was right.
Then Maya rushed into the room.
“Dad!””
I stood immediately.
“What happened?””
She held her phone.
“Bianca posted something.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
She showed me the screen.
A social media post.
A picture of Bianca crying.
The caption read:
*Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who hurt you first.*
Hundreds of comments already filled the page.
People defending her.
Calling her brave.
Calling me cruel.
I stared.
“She’s controlling the story.””
Daniel nodded.
“She’s moving faster now.””
Maya scrolled.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“There’s another post.””
She turned the phone around.
It was a picture.
Of our house.
Taken this morning.
From outside.
My blood ran cold.
Someone had been watching us.
Then a message appeared beneath it.
*You found the truth too late.*
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, my phone rang.
This time, the number was saved.
My mother’s name appeared.
A name I hadn’t seen on my phone in my entire life.
I couldn’t move.
Maya whispered:
“Dad…”
The phone kept ringing.
Daniel stared at the screen.
May you like
And quietly said:
“She finally found you.””
