Chapter 8: The Lie Beneath the Truth

I read Bianca’s message three times.

Each time, it felt heavier.

You should ask Daniel why he really came back into your life.

I looked up.

Daniel was still standing across from me.

Waiting.

“You want to explain?””

His face changed slightly.

Not surprise.

More like disappointment.

“She contacted you.””

I held up my phone.

“She knows you’re here.””

Daniel nodded.

“She always knows more than people think.””

I walked toward him.

“You came into my house with documents, accusations, and a story about my wife.””

I pointed at the envelope.

“Now she’s telling me you have your own secrets.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She’s right.””

That answer caught me off guard.

“You’re admitting it?””

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“Everyone in my life seems to have secrets.””

Daniel sat down slowly.

“I didn’t come here because I’m a good person.””

“Then why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I know what Bianca is capable of.””

I crossed my arms.

“That’s not an answer.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Years ago, I helped her build the image she has now.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“She was struggling financially. She wanted a different life.””

“So?””

“So I helped her create one.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You’re saying you made her?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I helped her. But I didn’t create who she became.””

The words bothered me because they sounded true.

“She learned quickly.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What exactly did you do?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I showed her how to organize information. How to negotiate. How to understand people.””

“And now?””

“Now she uses those things against people.””

I looked away.

My wife had always been impressive.

Confident.

Smart.

Ambitious.

I used to admire that.

Now I wondered if I had mistaken manipulation for strength.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, a photo.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

It was a picture of me.

Standing outside my office.

Taken from a distance.

Underneath it was a message.

*You’re not the only one being watched.*

I showed Daniel.

His face changed.

“That’s new.””

“You don’t know about this?””

“No.””

For the first time, he looked genuinely worried.

I looked upstairs.

At my daughters.

Then back at the phone.

“Who is doing this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that scared me more.

A loud sound came from upstairs.

A crash.

I ran.

“Maya!””

I reached the hallway.

The bedroom door was open.

Maya stood frozen beside Lily’s bed.

The window was open.

Cold air rushed into the room.

“What happened?””

Maya pointed.

“Someone was here.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

“I heard footsteps.””

I checked the room.

Nothing.

No person.

No movement.

But on the floor beside the window was something that wasn’t there before.

A small black flash drive.

I picked it up.

There was a label on it.

Three words.

*For Marcus Only.*

Daniel appeared behind me.

His face changed when he saw it.

“What?””

He whispered:

“That wasn’t Bianca.””

I turned.

“How do you know?””

“Because Bianca would want you to know it came from her.””

He looked at the flash drive.

“This person wants you afraid.””

I stared at the small piece of plastic in my hand.

“Maybe they want me to know the truth.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Maya.

Then Lily.

“They want you distracted.””

I felt a chill.

“From what?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because suddenly my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

Not Bianca.

Someone else.

“Marcus, you need to stop trusting Daniel.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who knows what happened before you met Bianca.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face went pale.

The woman continued.

“And if you watch that flash drive…”

Silence.

Then her voice lowered.

“You’ll learn why your wife chose you.””

The call ended.

I looked down at the flash drive.

And for the first time, I wondered if I had been chosen by Bianca…

May you like

not because she loved me.

But because I was part of a plan.
