Chapter 7: The Stranger at the Door
The man’s words hung in the air.
“I’m the reason Bianca started recording you first.””
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
My eyes moved from him to Maya.
Then back to him.
“Get out of my house.””
My voice was low.
Controlled.
The kind of calm that comes right before a storm.
The man didn’t move.
Instead, he looked around the dining room like he was remembering something.
“This house hasn’t changed much.””
My hands tightened.
“You heard me.””
“Marcus,” Maya whispered.
I looked back at her.
She looked terrified.
Not because of him.
Because she knew something I didn’t.
I stepped in front of both my daughters.
“You have five seconds to explain why you’re standing in my home.””
The man lifted his hands slightly.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””
“Then start talking.””
He looked at Lily’s sleeping spot upstairs.
Then at the dog bowl on the floor.
His expression changed.
A flash of disgust crossed his face.
“I didn’t know she went that far.””
I stared at him.
“You know Bianca.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
The man hesitated.
“My name is Daniel.””
That meant nothing.
I waited.
He continued.
“I used to work with Bianca.””
“Work with her doing what?””
Daniel looked at Maya’s phone.
“Finding ways to protect herself.””
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I think you believe Bianca’s problem is cruelty.””
I didn’t answer.
“Her problem is control.””
I watched him carefully.
“She doesn’t just want people to obey her. She wants them to believe they need her.””
Maya whispered:
“That’s what she did.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re Maya.””
She immediately stepped backward.
“How do you know my name?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable for the first time.
“Because Bianca talked about you.””
My jaw tightened.
“What did she say?””
He looked at me.
“She said you were the only thing standing between her and what she wanted.””
I felt my anger rise.
“What she wanted?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your money. Your company. Your reputation.””
Silence.
The words felt impossible.
Then they felt obvious.
I remembered every conversation Bianca had started about my schedule.
Every time she asked about my business.
Every time she complained that I spent too much time away.
I thought she wanted more time with me.
Maybe she wanted more control over me.
“How do you know this?”” I asked.
Daniel looked down.
“Because I helped her.””
Maya gasped.
I looked at him.
“You helped her?””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
My voice rose.
“My daughters were afraid in their own home because of you?””
Daniel looked away.
“I didn’t know she was hurting them.””
“You helped her manipulate me.””
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No denial.
Just the truth.
And somehow that made me angrier.
“Why are you here?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
I immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
Slowly, he pulled out a small envelope.
“I brought this.””
He placed it on the table.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Proof of what?””
“That Bianca has been preparing for a divorce for months.””
My heart sank.
Daniel continued.
“She planned to make you look unstable.””
Maya looked at me.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“She wanted everyone to believe you were an absent father who worked too much and couldn’t handle pressure.””
I stared at him.
“That’s insane.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“That was the plan.””
I picked up the envelope.
Inside were printed documents.
Emails.
Notes.
Financial information.
My name appeared everywhere.
My hands started shaking.
“Where did you get these?””
Daniel looked at me.
“From Bianca.””
The room went quiet.
Maya stepped closer.
“Why would she give you this?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“Because she trusted me.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Who are you to her?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That silence told me enough.
I felt sick.
“Maya,” I said quietly.
“Take Lily upstairs.””
“But Dad—”
“Now.””
She nodded.
As she moved away, Daniel watched her.
Then he said something that stopped me.
“There’s one more thing you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel’s face became serious.
“Bianca didn’t come up with this plan alone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who helped her?””
Daniel looked toward the hallway where Maya had disappeared.
Then back at me.
“The person you trusted most.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could answer…
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From Bianca.
