Chapter 3: The Evidence She Never Expected

I used to think the worst day of my life would be losing someone I loved.

I was wrong.

The worst day was discovering someone I loved was the person I needed to protect my children from.

Maya stood beside Lily, holding the phone with both hands.

Bianca watched her like a cornered animal.

“Marcus,” she said quietly.

I looked at her.

“Don’t let her manipulate you.””

I shook my head.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“This isn’t about winning.””

Bianca’s eyes narrowed.

“Then what is it about?””

I looked at Lily.

“It’s about my daughter being scared in her own home.””

Lily looked down.

Her little hands held onto Maya’s sleeve.

Maya opened the recording.

But before she pressed play, she stopped.

“Dad.””

“What?””

“There’s something you should know.””

The room became silent again.

“When I first noticed something was wrong, I thought Lily was just having nightmares.””

My heart sank.

“She would wake up crying?””

Maya nodded.

“She would ask if you were coming home.””

I looked at Bianca.

Her expression remained hard.

“She said Bianca told her you were too busy to care.””

My jaw tightened.

Bianca immediately shook her head.

“That never happened.””

Maya looked at her.

“You said it.””

“No.””

“You did.””

The argument stopped there.

Because Maya wasn’t yelling.

She wasn’t trying to hurt her.

She was simply telling the truth.

I crouched down beside Lily.

“Baby.””

She looked at me.

“Did you think Daddy didn’t care?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You were always working.””

My heart broke.

“I worked because I wanted to give you everything.””

She whispered:

“I just wanted you.””

Those four words hurt more than any scream could.

I hugged her.

Behind me, Bianca shifted.

Almost annoyed.

And that was the moment I understood something.

She didn’t see Lily as a child.

She saw her as a problem.

I stood up.

“Maya.””

She nodded.

She pressed play.

But before the video started, Bianca rushed forward again.

“No!””

I blocked her.

“Enough.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

I looked at her.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

She stared at me.

“You’re destroying your family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at my daughters.

“You did that.””

Bianca went quiet.

Maya kept holding the phone.

The screen reflected in her eyes.

For months, she had carried this fear alone.

For months, Lily had suffered silently.

And now the truth was finally standing in the room with us.

I reached for Maya’s shoulder.

“Whatever is on that phone…”

I looked at Bianca.

“…we’re facing it.””

Bianca’s confidence disappeared.

For the first time, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not in control.

Just afraid.

Maya’s thumb hovered over the screen.

Then she whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

“The recording starts with Bianca saying your name.””

My blood ran cold.

Bianca took one step backward.

Because she knew exactly what she had said.

Maya pressed the button.

And the first sound from the recording filled the dining room…

“Marcus thinks…”

The video continued.

And Bianca’s face changed.

Because she knew the truth was finally coming out.
