Chapter 5: The Secret Maya Carried

The house had never felt so quiet.

Not peaceful.

Quiet like something was waiting.

I sat at the dining table while Lily slept upstairs.

Maya sat across from me, her phone between us.

For fifteen years, I had watched my daughter grow.

First steps.

First day of school.

First heartbreak.

I thought I knew every expression on her face.

But that night, I saw one I had never seen before.

Guilt.

“Maya.””

She looked up.

“Yeah?””

“You did the right thing.””

She looked down.

“I should have told you sooner.””

I shook my head.

“You protected your sister.””

“But I lied.””

“You were scared.””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought you would blame me.””

Those words broke something inside me.

“Why would I blame you?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Because I already knew.

Somewhere along the way, Bianca had created a home where my daughters felt they had to survive instead of feel safe.

I reached across the table.

“Maya, I need you to tell me everything.””

She nodded slowly.

“There’s more.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What kind of more?””

She picked up her phone.

“Things Bianca said when you weren’t home.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“About Lily?””

“About both of us.””

She unlocked the phone.

Then she hesitated.

“Dad?””

“What?””

“If you hear it…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“You might not recognize her.””

I looked at the screen.

“I already don’t.””

Maya pressed play.

The first few seconds were just background noise.

A television.

Footsteps.

Then Bianca’s voice.

“You’re getting too attached to your father.””

Maya’s younger voice answered.

“I love my dad.””

“I know.””

A pause.

“That’s the problem.””

My blood turned cold.

Maya looked away.

The recording continued.

“Your father thinks he’s the hero. He comes home, gives you presents, and suddenly he’s the best parent.””

I closed my eyes.

Maya was silent.

I reached over and stopped the recording.

“Enough.””

She looked at me.

“Dad…”

“No.””

I took a breath.

“I need a minute.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the neighborhood was calm.

Lights glowing.

Cars passing.

Everyone living normal lives.

And inside my house, my children had been carrying something terrible.

I turned around.

“Maya.””

“Yes?””

“Did Bianca ever hurt you?””

She froze.

A second passed.

Then another.

And that silence answered me.

I walked back.

“What happened?””

“She never hit me.””

I nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

“But…”

Her voice became smaller.

“She knew how to make me feel afraid.””

I sat back down.

“What did she do?””

Maya looked at her hands.

“She would tell me you were tired of being a father.””

My face tightened.

“She said that?””

“She said one day you’d leave because raising us was too much.””

I felt something break inside me.

“She said that to you?””

Maya nodded.

“And she told Lily worse things.””

I looked upstairs.

“What things?””

Maya swallowed.

“She told Lily that if she wasn’t perfect, you would stop loving her.””

My eyes burned.

I stood immediately.

“I’m calling my lawyer.””

Maya looked surprised.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

I reached for my phone.

But before I could unlock it, Maya grabbed my hand.

“Dad.””

I looked at her.

“There’s something else.””

The fear in her voice stopped me.

“What?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“I found out Bianca wasn’t just doing this to us.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Maya opened another file on her phone.

“This recording wasn’t made in our house.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where was it made?””

She looked at the screen.

“At a place you know.””

“What place?””

Maya turned the phone around.

The file name appeared.

And underneath it was a date.

A date from three months ago.

The day I thought Bianca had been visiting her mother.

I stared at the screen.

Because the location attached to the recording was impossible.

“Dad…”

May you like

Maya whispered.

“She was meeting someone.””
