Chapter 14: The Last Piece of the Puzzle

I stared at Daniel.

“You had it?””

He didn’t look away.

“Yes.””

My anger came instantly.

“You had proof this entire time?””

“I had a copy.””

“That’s not the point.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice rose.

“My entire life has been people deciding what I should know.””

Daniel stayed silent.

“And you’re standing here doing the exact same thing.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

That answer stopped me.

No defense.

No excuse.

Just acceptance.

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because your father made me promise.””

I laughed.

“Everyone has a promise.””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“My daughters had to survive because adults were keeping promises.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was wrong.””

The honesty made it harder.

Because I wanted someone to fight back.

Someone to blame.

But everyone was finally admitting the truth.

“Where is it?””

Daniel reached into his bag.

He pulled out a small wooden box.

Old.

Worn.

My father’s initials were carved into the top.

I touched it.

And for a second, I was twenty years old again.

Standing at my father’s workshop.

Smelling oil and metal.

Hearing him tell me:

“Never let anyone make you believe you’re less than you are.””

My hands shook.

“How long have you had this?””

“Eight years.””

The exact length of my marriage.

The exact length of the lie.

I opened the box.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, it means the people I feared were closer than I thought.

My breath caught.

Maya moved beside me.

I continued reading.

Your greatest mistake will be believing people only want money.

Some people want control more than anything.

I looked at Daniel.

Then continued.

The person who comes closest to you may not love you. They may only want what you represent.

My heart hurt.

Because my father knew.

He knew someone like Bianca could exist.

The letter continued.

But remember this: the most valuable thing I left you is not a company, a formula, or a trust.

It is your ability to choose who deserves your love.

I stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then another paper fell from the box.

A legal document.

Daniel looked at it.

“That’s it.””

I picked it up.

“What?””

“The agreement.””

I read the signatures.

My father.

Ethan.

And another name.

Bianca.

But there was something strange.

A date.

The date was after Bianca and I married.

My blood ran cold.

“She changed it.””

Daniel nodded.

“She altered the agreement.””

Maya looked confused.

“Why?””

I read the final section.

And then I understood.

The agreement wasn’t about money.

It was about ownership.

Control.

If I disappeared.

If I was declared unstable.

If I lost control of the company.

Bianca would become the legal decision-maker.

She didn’t just want my wealth.

She wanted my entire future.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Bianca.

*You found the box.*

My heart dropped.

Another message.

*I always wondered how long it would take.*

Daniel looked at me.

“She knows.””

“How?””

I looked around.

Then I saw it.

A tiny light.

On the wall.

A camera.

My stomach turned.

“She’s been watching the house.””

Maya immediately grabbed Lily’s hand.

“Dad.””

I moved toward them.

“It’s okay.””

But I knew it wasn’t.

My phone buzzed again.

A video appeared.

From Bianca.

I opened it.

Her face appeared on screen.

Calm.

Perfect.

Like she wasn’t the person who destroyed our family.

“Marcus.””

I stared.

“You look angry.””

I said nothing.

She smiled.

“I know you found out everything.””

My fists tightened.

“You hurt my daughters.””

Her expression barely changed.

“I did what I had to do.””

“You don’t get to say that.””

She leaned closer to the camera.

“Actually, I do.””

A pause.

“Because you still don’t know the biggest truth.””

I felt a chill.

“What truth?””

Bianca smiled.

“The reason your father trusted Daniel.””

The video ended.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Not nervous.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Your father didn’t trust me because I protected him.””

May you like

A pause.

“He trusted me because I betrayed him first.””
