Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Smile

“Marcus thinks he’s protecting you.””

The recording played through Maya’s phone speakers.

Bianca’s own voice filled the dining room.

A voice I recognized.

But somehow didn’t recognize at all.

The confident voice.

The charming voice.

The voice she used when she wanted neighbors, friends, and family to believe she was the perfect wife.

Only now there was no audience.

No fake smile.

No carefully chosen words.

Just the truth.

Maya stood frozen beside Lily.

I didn’t move.

Neither did Bianca.

The only sound in the room was the recording.

“Your father doesn’t see everything,” Bianca’s voice continued.

“He thinks because he works hard, he knows what happens here.””

My stomach tightened.

I looked at Bianca.

She looked away.

“Maya,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“How long have you had this?””

She swallowed.

“Six days.””

“Six days?””

She nodded.

“I wanted to show you sooner.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was scared you wouldn’t believe me.””

Those words hit harder than anything Bianca had done.

Not because Maya was accusing me.

Because I realized she had been afraid to come to me.

My daughter.

My own daughter.

Had been standing in the same house, carrying fear, because she didn’t know if her father would protect her.

I stepped closer.

“Maya, look at me.””

She slowly lifted her eyes.

“I should have noticed.””

She shook her head.

“No, Dad…”

“I should have.””

The room went quiet.

Then Bianca suddenly laughed.

A short, bitter laugh.

“So that’s it?””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped some wet dog food from her sleeve.

“You’re going to stand there and act like I’m some monster?””

I stared at her.

“You forced Lily toward a dog bowl.””

“She was being corrected.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“She was being humiliated.””

Bianca’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand raising children.””

That sentence almost made me laugh.

Almost.

“I have raised children.””

“No, you provide for them.””

She stepped forward.

“You work. You pay bills. You buy things. But I’m the one here every day.””

I looked at Lily.

My little girl was holding onto Maya’s hand.

“But you used that trust to hurt them.””

Bianca’s face hardened.

“I was trying to make them stronger.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Bianca looked at her.

“You don’t know anything.””

Maya held up the phone.

“I know enough.””

The recording continued.

Bianca’s voice came again.

“You need to stop defending Lily all the time.””

A younger version of Maya’s voice appeared.

“She’s five.””

“And she needs to learn.””

The recording stopped.

Maya lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Then Bianca pointed at Maya.

“You recorded private conversations.””

“You were hurting my sister.””

“That doesn’t give you permission.””

I stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

Bianca looked at me.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t try to make her the problem.””

Her expression changed.

Because she realized something.

She had lost control.

For years, Bianca controlled every room she entered.

She controlled conversations.

She controlled emotions.

She controlled how people saw her.

But not anymore.

She looked at Lily.

And something in her face shifted.

Not regret.

Calculation.

“Lily,” she said softly.

My body reacted immediately.

“No.””

Bianca looked at me.

“I just want to talk to her.””

“She doesn’t want to talk to you.””

Lily moved closer behind Maya.

Bianca noticed.

That hurt her pride.

“You’re turning them against me.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

I looked at my daughters.

“They’re finally telling me the truth.””

Bianca grabbed her purse from the chair.

The movement was sudden.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Am I?””

She stopped near the doorway.

“You think these recordings prove everything?””

Nobody answered.

She smiled.

But there was no warmth in it.

“Marcus, you don’t know what else is happening.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Maya’s phone.

Then at me.

“It means you should be careful before you destroy your own family.””

The threat was obvious.

And for the first time, I wondered if this was bigger than Lily and the dog bowl.

Bianca opened the dining room door.

Then she paused.

“Oh, and Marcus?””

I stared at her.

“You’re going to want to hear what’s on the next recording.””

My heart stopped.

“What next recording?””

She smiled slightly.

“The one Maya didn’t know I knew about.””

May you like

Then she walked away.

And the door slammed shut.
