Chapter 10: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
The location on my phone burned into my mind.
A place.
A time.
A warning.
But the sentence was what stayed with me.
THE MAN YOU CALL YOUR BROTHER IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LIED.
I looked at Cole.
He saw the doubt before I said a word.
“Who was it?””
I didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Because I knew Cole.
I knew the way his shoulders moved when he was preparing for bad news.
I knew the way his jaw tightened when he was hiding something.
And right now?
He was terrified.
Not for himself.
For what I was about to learn.
“Your daughter’s mother called,” I said.
The entire room changed.
Maya looked up.
“My mom?””
Cole froze.
“What did she say?””
I stared at him.
“She said you don’t know the whole truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Darius stopped smiling.
That caught my attention.
Because Darius always looked like he knew everything.
But for one second…
He looked surprised.
Cole noticed too.
“What aren’t you telling me?”” I asked.
His eyes moved to Darius.
Then back to me.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s a lie.””
“It’s not.””
“Cole.””
My voice hardened.
“I watched you hide things for twelve years. I’m done guessing.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I needed him to feel it.
Because too many people had been protecting secrets.
And Maya was the one paying the price.
Darius slowly stepped down from the balcony.
“You see now, Bear?””
I looked at him.
“You’re not the first person Cole betrayed.””
Cole turned.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Darius smiled.
“I’m not the one hiding.””
He reached into his jacket.
This time, he pulled out a folder.
He threw it onto the table.
The pages scattered.
Names.
Dates.
Photos.
Records.
My eyes moved across the papers.
Then stopped.
Cole’s name.
A signature.
A date from thirteen years ago.
One year before he disappeared.
“What is this?””
Cole didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“What is this?””
His silence was enough.
Darius crossed his arms.
“Your friend signed an agreement.””
Cole stepped forward.
“That agreement was a trap.””
“But you signed it.””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Cole looked at me.
“Because I was trying to get close enough to destroy them.””
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But belief had become dangerous.
“How many people knew?””
“No one.””
“Not even me?””
“No.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
Maya looked between us.
“Why is everyone angry?””
That question broke through everything.
I looked at her.
Because she was the reason this mattered.
Not the revenge.
Not the betrayal.
Her.
I walked toward her.
“Maya, none of this is your fault.””
She looked down.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“But people keep fighting because of me.””
I crouched.
“No.””
My voice softened.
“People are fighting because adults made choices.””
She looked at me.
“And my dad?””
I glanced at Cole.
He looked away.
That hurt more than I expected.
“He made choices too.””
Maya nodded slowly.
Like she was trying to understand something too big for her age.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Because Maya didn’t have a phone.
She looked confused.
“I don’t know this number.””
I took it from her.
Answered.
A woman’s voice.
“Bear?””
The same voice.
Her mother.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t stay long.””
“You need to tell me the truth.””
A pause.
Then:
“I will.””
I looked at Cole.
He stood completely still.
The woman continued.
“Cole did not abandon us.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why?””
“Because he was trying to protect something.””
“What?””
Another pause.
“The original files.””
Darius’s expression changed.
“What did you say?””
The woman heard him.
“Darius?””
The line went silent.
Then:
“Oh God.””
I looked at Cole.
“What?””
The woman whispered:
“He’s there.””
Darius moved toward the phone.
“No.””
His voice changed.
For the first time, he sounded afraid.
The call ended.
Everyone stood frozen.
Because one thing was clear.
Darius wasn’t just chasing us.
He was afraid of what Maya’s mother knew.
A second later, a sound came from outside.
A car door.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone walking toward the warehouse.
Cole looked toward the entrance.
“She came.””
The door opened.
A woman stood there.
Older than I expected.
Tired.
But with the same determined eyes Maya had.
Maya gasped.
“Mom?””
The woman broke down.
“Maya.””
She ran forward.
And for the first time in years…
A family that had been separated finally stood together.
But nobody moved.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
May you like
If Maya’s mother was alive…
Who had Darius been talking to all this time?
