Chapter 9: The Mother’s Hidden Choice
Nobody spoke.
The warehouse felt like it was holding its breath.
Darius stood above us like he already knew the ending.
Cole looked at the floor.
That hurt more than anything.
Because Cole had always been the man who looked me in the eyes.
Even when things were bad.
Even when things were impossible.
But now?
He couldn’t look at me.
“Cole.””
He swallowed.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
“Find out what?””
Darius answered.
“Your friend isn’t just Maya’s father.””
Cole’s eyes snapped toward him.
“Stop.””
Darius ignored him.
“He was chosen.””
My expression hardened.
“What does that mean?””
Cole finally looked at me.
“Maya’s mother was investigating Eagle Security.””
I frowned.
“Investigating?””
“She was a journalist.””
The words surprised me.
“She was trying to expose them.””
Cole nodded.
“And she found me.””
“Because you worked there.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Maya.
Then back at him.
“So what?””
Cole took a breath.
“She needed someone inside.””
The pieces started moving.
“You were helping her.””
“Yes.””
Darius laughed.
“Helping?””
He shook his head.
“He fell in love.””
Cole didn’t deny it.
The room went silent.
Maya watched him.
“You loved my mom?””
Cole nodded.
“Yes.””
Her voice became smaller.
“Then why didn’t you stay?””
Cole looked like the question physically hurt.
“Because when Eagle found out, they came after both of you.””
“And you?””
“I made them think I was gone.””
Darius stepped closer to the railing.
“But he never told you the most important part.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Darius smiled.
“Maya wasn’t just a child they were looking for.””
Cole’s face changed.
“Darius.””
“They were looking for what her mother left behind.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did she leave?””
Cole’s silence answered first.
Then:
“Evidence.””
The warehouse went still.
“Evidence of what?””
“Everything.””
Darius smiled.
“The files. The names. The payments.””
My mind raced.
“So Maya has them?””
Cole shook his head.
“No.””
Darius interrupted.
“She has the only key.””
Maya stepped backward.
“I don’t have anything.””
Cole immediately moved toward her.
“I know.””
Darius looked at her.
“But your mother trusted you.””
Maya shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
Cole crouched beside her.
“Maya, listen to me.””
She looked at him.
“Your mother loved you more than anything.””
“Then why did she hide things from me?””
Cole’s face softened.
“Because she wanted you to grow up normal.””
A tear rolled down Maya’s cheek.
“I don’t even know who I am.””
Cole reached for her hand.
“You’re my daughter.””
She looked at him.
“That’s all?””
Cole nodded.
“That’s everything.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Darius ruined it.
“Touching.””
He looked at the men beside him.
“Take them.””
The three men moved.
I stepped forward.
The bikers behind me did the same.
The room exploded into motion.
Not chaos.
Not panic.
Training.
Years of standing together.
Years of protecting each other.
But Darius didn’t fight.
He just watched.
Like he knew something we didn’t.
Then my phone rang.
I answered without thinking.
A woman’s voice came through.
“Bear?””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Cole heard it too.
His face changed.
“Maya’s mother.””
The woman was crying.
“Please listen to me.””
I stepped away from the noise.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Then why call?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Cole doesn’t know the whole truth.””
I looked at Cole.
He heard my silence.
“What did she say?””
The woman continued.
“Bear, before you trust anyone…”
The call cut.
I looked at my phone.
One new message appeared.
A location.
And one sentence.
THE MAN YOU CALL YOUR BROTHER IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LIED.
I slowly turned toward Cole.
He looked at my face.
And immediately knew.
Something had changed.
May you like
Because for the first time…
I wasn’t sure who I was protecting.
