Chapter 13: The Choice Between Blood and Truth

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But it felt like hours.

When the emergency lights came back on, everyone was looking at Cole.

Not Malcolm.

Not the locked doors.

Cole.

Because the video had done exactly what Malcolm wanted.

It planted a question.

And questions were dangerous.

Especially when they came from someone you trusted.

Maya stood beside me, holding my hand.

“Bear?””

I looked down.

Her face was confused.

She wasn’t looking at Cole like a criminal.

She was looking at him like a daughter trying to understand her father.

And somehow that made it worse.

Cole stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain.””

He looked around the warehouse.

At the locked doors.

At the screen.

At Maya.

Then he looked back at me.

“The video was real.””

Nobody moved.

Even Darius looked surprised.

Cole continued.

“But it wasn’t what Malcolm wanted you to believe.””

My jaw tightened.

“Then tell me what it was.””

Cole took a breath.

“Twelve years ago, I was working inside Eagle Security. I was trying to collect evidence against them.””

The woman nodded.

“He was helping me.””

Cole looked at her.

“I found out Malcolm had built a network. Not just security contracts. He was buying information about people.””

“Families,” I said.

Cole nodded.

“Families.””

His eyes moved to Maya.

“And children.””

The room became quiet.

“I found records of everything. Names. Locations.

Payments. People they controlled.””

Darius laughed bitterly.

“And you thought you could just walk away?””

Cole looked at him.

“No.””

Darius’s expression changed.

Because he knew.

“I knew they would come after me.””

Cole continued.

“So I made a deal.””

I frowned.

“With Malcolm?””

“Yes.””

My anger rose.

“You made a deal with the man you were trying to expose?””

“I needed time.””

“For what?””

Cole looked at Maya.

“For her.””

The answer stopped me.

He walked toward the table.

“The night Maya was born, I learned Malcolm knew about her.””

The woman closed her eyes.

“He wanted the evidence her mother had collected.””

Cole nodded.

“She had hidden copies of everything.””

“Where?”” I asked.

Cole looked at Maya.

“Somewhere only she could access.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Me?””

Cole nodded.

“Your mother created a backup system.””

The woman stepped forward.

“Maya was too young to understand it. That was the point.””

I looked at her.

“You put a secret in your own daughter?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I protected her.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small necklace.

Maya touched her own neck.

“I’ve had this my whole life.””

The woman nodded.

“Your father gave it to you.””

Cole looked down.

“I thought it was the safest place.””

Darius stared.

“You hid the key on a child.””

Cole’s eyes hardened.

“I hid it where nobody would think to look.””

The screen flickered.

Malcolm appeared again.

“Beautiful.””

Everyone turned.

“You see why Cole was useful?””

Cole looked up.

“You’re done.””

Malcolm smiled.

“Am I?””

The doors behind us unlocked.

Everyone froze.

Malcolm continued.

“You have one hour because I wanted you to choose.””

“Choose what?””

“Truth.””

The screen showed two options.

A file upload.

And a countdown.

“Release the evidence, and thousands of people will see everything.””

I stared.

“Isn’t that what you wanted?””

The woman shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Malcolm built traps into the files.””

Cole nodded.

“If released without removing them, innocent people could be exposed.””

Malcolm smiled.

“See?””

He leaned closer to the camera.

“I always knew people would choose fear.””

Then the screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Darius looked at Cole.

“You still don’t get it.””

Cole turned.

“What?””

“You’re still trying to save everyone.””

Darius looked at Maya.

“That’s why you failed.””

Cole stepped toward him.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I failed because I trusted the wrong people.””

The words hit Darius.

Hard.

Before he could respond, the woman’s phone buzzed.

She checked it.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What happened?””

She showed me the screen.

A message.

FROM MALCOLM.

THE KEY IS NOT THE NECKLACE.

Maya’s necklace suddenly felt heavier.

Cole looked confused.

“Then what is?””

Another message appeared.

THE KEY IS THE GIRL WHO KNOWS THE CODE.

Everyone turned toward Maya.

Her face went pale.

“I don’t know any code.””

The warehouse went silent.

Then Darius whispered:

“Yes, you do.””

Maya looked at him.

“What?””

Darius stared.

“Your mother taught you.””

The woman froze.

Because she knew.

And that scared me.

“What did you teach her?””

The woman looked at Maya.

Then at Cole.

May you like

Then whispered:

“A song.””
