Chapter 14: The Last Code
Maya sat on the floor of the warehouse, wrapped in my leather jacket.
She looked so small.
Too small for the weight everyone had placed on her shoulders.
A secret.
A code.
A war between adults.
I hated it.
Because children shouldn’t carry the consequences of grown people’s mistakes.
Cole sat across from her.
Not as a fighter.
Not as a man running.
Just a father.
“Maya.””
She looked up.
“Yes?””
“Do you remember a song your mother used to sing?””
She frowned.
“I remember lots of songs.””
“Not the words.””
Cole glanced at her necklace.
“The melody.””
Maya touched it.
“My mom sang when I was scared.””
The woman nodded.
“That’s it.””
I looked at her.
“You made a code into a lullaby.””
She nodded slowly.
“I knew they would search everything.””
Her eyes filled.
“But nobody searches a child’s memories.””
Maya closed her eyes.
Then quietly began humming.
At first, nothing happened.
Then the necklace lit up.
A tiny blue light.
Everyone froze.
Darius stepped forward.
“No.””
Cole stood immediately.
“Stay back.””
The necklace opened.
Inside was a small chip.
Not bigger than a fingernail.
The room went silent.
Maya stared.
“I had that with me the whole time?””
Cole nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked hurt.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You knew something was inside my necklace?””
Cole looked away.
“Yes.””
Her face changed.
A child’s disappointment was more painful than anger.
“You kept another secret.””
Cole closed his eyes.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised her.
“I was wrong.””
Maya looked at him.
“You should have trusted me.””
The words broke him.
Because they were true.
Cole lowered his head.
“I should have.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the chip connected to a device.
Files appeared.
Thousands of them.
Names.
Records.
Evidence.
But also something else.
A list.
A list of people still working for Malcolm.
Darius looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“No.””
I looked.
And saw his name.
DARIUS REED.
Status:
ACTIVE.
I looked at him.
“Your father was tracking you too.””
Darius stared at the screen.
Malcolm’s voice came through the speakers.
“Darius.””
Everyone turned.
The screen activated.
“Did you really think I trusted you?””
Darius looked furious.
“You used me.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
No hesitation.
Darius looked destroyed.
“You’re my son.””
“And you were my investment.””
That sentence broke something in him.
For the first time, I saw Darius not as a threat.
But as another victim.
A dangerous one.
But a victim.
Malcolm continued:
“Bring me the chip.””
Darius didn’t move.
“You hear me?””
Still nothing.
Then Darius slowly looked at Cole.
At Maya.
At me.
And something changed.
“I’m done.””
The warehouse went quiet.
Malcolm laughed.
“You?””
Darius looked at the screen.
“You made me into this.””
A pause.
“But I’m choosing what happens next.””
The lights flickered.
Then alarms started.
Malcolm’s voice sharpened.
“Darius.””
But Darius was already moving.
He grabbed a control panel near the wall.
The doors unlocked.
“Go.””
Nobody moved.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Darius looked away.
“Because I know what it feels like when someone decides you’re only useful.””
Cole stared.
“You’re helping us?””
Darius shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Maya.
“I’m stopping him.””
The alarm grew louder.
Outside, vehicles approached.
Malcolm’s people.
Darius looked at me.
“Get them out.””
I hesitated.
Then nodded.
We moved.
Cole grabbed Maya’s hand.
The woman followed.
The bikers covered the exit.
But before I left, I stopped beside Darius.
“You’re not forgiven.””
He gave a small smile.
“I know.””
“But you did the right thing.””
He looked surprised.
Then looked away.
“Go, Bear.””
We ran.
Behind us, the warehouse filled with noise.
Engines.
Shouting.
Chaos.
And as we escaped into the night, one thing became clear.
Malcolm had lost control of the files.
May you like
But he still had one weapon left.
Himself.
