Chapter 7: The Man Who Called Himself Family
The room went silent.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind that comes right before something breaks.
Maya stood frozen against the wall, her small hands gripping the edge of her pink jacket.
Cole was between her and Darius.
I had never seen Cole look like that.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Ready.
Like every survival instinct he had buried for twelve years had just woken up.
Darius smiled.
A calm smile.
The kind that made my skin crawl.
“Move away from her,” I said.
Darius looked at me.
Then laughed softly.
“Still the same, Bear.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Cole answered before Darius could.
“He’s the reason I disappeared.””
Darius tilted his head.
“That’s not fair.””
Cole’s jaw tightened.
“You destroyed everything.””
Darius looked almost offended.
“After everything we did together, that’s what you say?””
I looked between them.
Everything we did together.
Those words stayed with me.
Because Cole had told me about a company.
About secrets.
About people hiding information.
But he never told me he had someone beside him.
Someone like Darius.
“Explain,” I said.
Neither man moved.
Darius looked at me.
“Cole never told you?””
“No.””
“Of course he didn’t.””
Cole’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t.””
Darius ignored him.
“He always liked being the hero.””
The room felt smaller.
I kept my eyes on Darius.
“What does that mean?””
Darius walked slowly toward the center of the room.
Maya moved closer to me.
Good.
That was where she needed to be.
“He told you he left to protect his daughter.””
I said nothing.
Darius smiled.
“But he didn’t tell you why they came after him.””
Cole’s voice was sharp.
“Enough.””
Darius looked at him.
“You’re still protecting the truth.””
Then he looked at me.
“Your friend wasn’t just working security.””
I turned to Cole.
He looked away.
That was enough.
A small crack.
But enough.
“You lied to me.””
Cole’s face tightened.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
“There is always a choice.””
“Not when people are threatening your child.””
Maya looked between us.
“My dad did something bad?””
The question cut through the room.
Everyone stopped.
Cole’s expression changed instantly.
The anger disappeared.
The fear disappeared.
Only a father remained.
“No.””
He knelt down.
“Maya, look at me.””
She hesitated.
Then looked at him.
“I made mistakes.””
Her eyes filled.
“But I never stopped loving you.””
Darius watched silently.
Then he said:
“Beautiful.””
Cole stood.
“Get out.””
Darius smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
He reached into his jacket.
My hand moved immediately.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
A picture of Cole.
Darius.
And another man.
A man I didn’t recognize.
All three standing beside motorcycles.
Years ago.
I looked at Cole.
“Who is the third person?””
Cole didn’t answer.
Darius did.
“That’s the man who built everything.””
“What everything?””
Darius leaned back.
“The system.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What system?””
“The one Cole tried to destroy.””
Cole stepped forward.
“Leave before you make this worse.””
Darius laughed.
“Worse?””
He looked around the room.
“You found his daughter. You found him. You found the truth.””
Then his smile disappeared.
“You have no idea how bad this already is.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone looked down.
Mine.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo.
This time it was not of Maya.
It was of Cole.
Taken years ago.
Standing beside a car.
With a man in the background.
A man wearing the same eagle tattoo.
I looked up.
“Darius.””
He smiled.
“Now you’re starting to understand.””
Cole grabbed my arm.
“Don’t listen to him.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Silence.
The worst kind.
Because Cole had no answer.
Maya stepped closer.
“Dad?””
Cole looked at her.
And that was when I saw it.
Regret.
Real regret.
Not the kind people fake when they’re caught.
The kind that follows someone every morning.
Darius walked toward the door.
“You have until tomorrow.””
I watched him carefully.
“For what?””
He looked at Maya.
“To decide if you want to know what Cole really did.””
The door closed behind him.
Nobody moved.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“What happens tomorrow?””
I looked at Cole.
He looked back at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Tomorrow they come for Maya.””
