Chapter 11: The File That Could Destroy Them

Maya’s mother held her like she was afraid she would disappear.

Maya held on tighter.

No one interrupted.

Not me.

Not Cole.

Not even Darius.

For a few seconds, the world outside the warehouse didn’t exist.

There was no Eagle Security.

No threats.

No secrets.

Just a mother and daughter reunited.

Then Darius spoke.

“You shouldn’t have come.””

The woman slowly turned.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You’re older.””

Darius smiled.

“You’re alive.””

“So are you.””

Those words hit differently.

Like there was a history between them.

A dangerous one.

I looked at Cole.

He looked just as confused.

“You knew she survived?””

Cole shook his head.

“No.””

The woman looked at him.

“I tried to tell you.””

Cole froze.

“What?””

She looked away.

“I couldn’t.””

The anger returned.

Not mine.

Cole’s.

“You let me believe you were gone.””

“I let you believe I was dead because people were watching you.””

“You could have contacted me.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t understand.””

Cole stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

Then at Darius.

“The person controlling Eagle Security isn’t Darius.””

Silence.

Darius laughed.

But it sounded forced.

“Don’t.””

She ignored him.

“It never was.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then who?””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a small metal device.

A storage drive.

“This.””

Darius’s expression changed.

Everyone noticed.

“What is that?”” I asked.

“The evidence.””

Cole stared.

“You found it?””

She nodded.

“I hid it before they found me.””

Darius moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

I stepped between him and the woman.

“Try it.””

He stopped.

For the first time, he looked at me differently.

Not as an obstacle.

As a problem.

“You really think you understand what you’re involved in?””

“No.””

I looked at Maya.

“But I know who I’m protecting.””

Darius smiled.

“You always were predictable, Bear.””

“Maybe.””

I stepped closer.

“But I’m predictable for the right reasons.””

The bikers moved behind me.

A wall.

Darius looked around.

Then laughed.

“You think numbers matter?””

Cole looked at him.

“What happened to you?””

Darius’s smile faded.

“What happened to me?””

He pointed at Cole.

“You left.””

The room went quiet.

“You got to pretend you were the good man.””

Cole said nothing.

“You walked away.””

Darius’s voice grew sharper.

“And I stayed.””

I watched his face.

There was anger.

But underneath?

Pain.

“You think that excuses everything?”” Cole asked.

“No.””

Darius looked at him.

“I think it explains it.””

Nobody answered.

Because maybe that was the most dangerous kind of villain.

Someone who believed they were the victim.

The woman stepped closer.

“Darius, it’s over.””

He looked at the drive.

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“It’s not.””

Then every light in the warehouse shut off.

Again.

But this time…

It wasn’t him.

Everyone moved.

I grabbed Maya.

Cole grabbed the woman.

The bikers formed a circle.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Slow.

Warning.

A sound echoed.

A message playing from the warehouse speakers.

A man’s voice.

Unknown.

“Bring me the drive.””

Everyone froze.

Darius looked up.

And for the first time…

He looked scared.

The voice continued:

“Or I release everything.””

Cole whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He stared into the darkness.

Then said:

“The person who started this.””

A screen above us turned on.

Static.

Then a face appeared.

An older Black man.

Cold eyes.

Calm expression.

The same eagle tattoo.

Not on his arm.

On his hand.

Darius looked up.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, son.””

Darius stepped backward.

And I understood.

May you like

The truth was not behind Darius.

It was above him.
