Chapter 8: The Truth Under the Leather Vest
We left the motel before sunrise.
No lights.
No conversation.
Just motorcycles cutting through empty roads.
Maya rode with one of my trusted bikers while Cole followed behind me.
For the first time in twelve years, my brother was riding beside me again.
And somehow it felt wrong.
Because the man beside me was both familiar and a stranger.
We stopped at an abandoned warehouse outside town.
A place nobody would think to look.
Inside, Cole sat across from me.
I placed the old photograph on the table.
“Start talking.””
He looked exhausted.
“I was recruited when I was thirty.””
“By who?””
“The company.””
“Name.””
Cole hesitated.
Then:
“Eagle Security.””
I frowned.
“The tattoo.””
He nodded.
“That’s where it came from.””
I looked at him.
“So the eagle wasn’t just yours.””
“No.””
He looked down.
“It was theirs.””
I leaned back.
“You told me it meant freedom.””
Cole gave a small, painful smile.
“I wanted it to.””
The answer bothered me.
Because I remembered that tattoo.
I remembered him proudly showing it.
But maybe I never knew what I was looking at.
“Why join them?””
Cole was quiet.
Then he said:
“Money.””
I stared.
He nodded.
“I know how that sounds.””
“It sounds like you.””
His eyes lifted.
“That’s fair.””
He took a breath.
“My mother was sick. Bills were impossible. I thought I could do dangerous work for a few years and walk away.””
“And?””
“I was wrong.””
The warehouse went quiet.
“What did they make you do?””
Cole looked toward Maya.
“She can’t hear this.””
I nodded.
Marcus took her outside.
Then Cole continued.
“They collected information.””
“About people?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Control.””
The word sat heavily.
“They knew everything. Addresses. Families. Weaknesses.””
“And you?””
“I helped build the system.””
I felt anger rise.
“You did.””
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No defense.
Just yes.
That somehow made it worse.
“I trusted you.””
“I know.””
“You were my brother.””
“I know.””
The silence between us hurt more than yelling.
Finally I asked:
“When did you decide to leave?””
Cole looked at the floor.
“When I found Maya’s file.””
I frowned.
“Her file?””
“They knew about her before she was born.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because of her mother.””
“What about her mother?””
Cole swallowed.
“She was connected to someone inside Eagle Security.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“The founder.””
I froze.
“The man in the picture?””
Cole nodded.
“Darius’s father.””
I stared at the photograph again.
Three men.
Three motorcycles.
Three secrets.
“So Maya is connected to the man who built this?””
“Yes.””
“And Darius wants her because?””
“Because he believes she belongs to them.””
My hands tightened.
“She is a child.””
“I know.””
“Not an asset.””
“I know.””
Cole looked at me.
“That’s why I ran.””
Outside, we heard footsteps.
Maya appeared.
“Can I ask something?””
I looked at Cole.
Then at her.
“Yes.””
She held the photograph.
“Why did you leave me?””
Cole’s face broke.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The question he had spent twelve years avoiding was finally standing in front of him.
“I was scared.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“You weren’t scared of me?””
“No.””
He stood slowly.
“I was scared that loving you would put you in danger.””
She looked down.
“Did you think about me?””
Cole didn’t hesitate.
“Every day.””
The room went quiet.
Maya wiped her face.
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
Cole opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, the warehouse lights shut off.
Complete darkness.
Then a sound.
A motorcycle engine.
Inside the building.
Everyone froze.
A voice echoed through the warehouse.
“Still hiding, Cole?””
Darius.
My hand moved toward my weapon.
Cole whispered:
“He found us.””
The engine grew louder.
Then the lights came back.
Darius stood on the second floor balcony.
Not alone.
Three men stood behind him.
All wearing black jackets.
All with eagle tattoos.
Darius looked down.
“You should have stayed buried.””
Cole stepped forward.
“You don’t get to threaten my family.””
Darius smiled.
“Family?””
His eyes moved to me.
Then Maya.
“Bear doesn’t even know the worst part.””
My stomach tightened.
“What worst part?””
Darius looked directly at Cole.
“Tell him.””
Cole said nothing.
Darius smiled.
“Tell him why Maya’s mother chose you.””
The silence was immediate.
I looked at Cole.
“What is he talking about?””
Cole didn’t answer.
And that was when I knew.
May you like
Whatever truth was coming next…
It was bigger than a missing father.
