Chapter 6: The Name Behind the Shadow

The black SUV waited outside the garage.

Neither of us moved.

Cole stood beside me, staring through the dirty window.

For the first time since I found him, I saw something that scared me.

Not fear of death.

Fear of being too late.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

Cole didn’t answer.

“Cole.””

He closed his eyes.

Then said:

“My old partner.””

I frowned.

“You said you didn’t know who was involved.””

“I said I didn’t know who was still involved.””

The engine outside continued running.

A low vibration filling the garage.

“Name.””

Cole looked at me.

“Darius.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to him.

“You trusted him?””

Cole laughed quietly.

“That’s the problem.””

He looked down.

“I did.””

A horn sounded outside.

One short beep.

Cole immediately moved away from the window.

“Turn off the lights.””

I stared.

“You’re afraid of him.””

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

Because Cole had never been afraid of anyone.

Not police.

Not criminals.

Not anyone.

I turned off the lights.

The garage went dark.

We stood silently.

Then the front door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was trying to open it.

Cole whispered:

“Do not let Maya see this side of me.””

I looked at him.

“What side?””

“The side that survived.””

The door stopped moving.

Then footsteps.

Walking away.

A few seconds later, the SUV drove off.

I waited.

Then I moved toward the window.

Gone.

Again.

Always leaving before we could reach them.

I turned back.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

Cole nodded.

“I will.””

“Now.””

He looked at the floor.

“Darius and I worked security for powerful people. People who paid us to make problems disappear.””

My face hardened.

“You were a fixer?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I was supposed to be.””

The words hung there.

“I thought I could control it.””

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“I couldn’t.””

The honesty made it worse.

Because Cole wasn’t making excuses.

He knew exactly what he had done.

“When did Maya become involved?””

Cole looked toward the garage door.

“The day I found out someone inside the company was selling information about children.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“Families. Identities. Records.””

I felt sick.

“And Maya?””

“She was never supposed to exist in their files.””

“Why?””

“Because I hid her.””

I stared at him.

“She was already born.””

Cole nodded.

“I erased everything I could.””

“Then why disappear?””

“Because someone found out.””

The room became colder.

“Maya’s mother?””

Cole looked away.

“She tried to help me.””

“What happened to her?””

A long pause.

“She’s alive.””

I exhaled.

“But?””

“She knows we’re in danger.””

I thought about Maya’s words.

Her mother crying.

Her mother saying find Bear.

“Why send her to me?””

Cole looked directly at me.

“Because you were the only person I trusted.””

That sentence should have made me feel better.

It didn’t.

Because trust was exactly what got us here.

My phone rang.

Maya.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

Her voice came through.

“Bear?””

I relaxed slightly.

“I’m here.””

“There’s someone outside.””

My body went cold.

“Where are you?””

“The motel.””

I heard movement.

Then a whisper.

“Bear…”

“What?””

“I think he knows my name.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“Stay inside.””

Cole was already moving.

“What happened?””

“Maya.””

His expression changed instantly.

Not the face of a man running away.

The face of a father.

We reached the motel in minutes.

The bikers outside were gone.

That was the first thing I noticed.

No guards.

No motorcycles.

Nothing.

The door to Maya’s room was slightly open.

I stepped forward.

Cole grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

He pointed.

A small piece of paper was taped to the door.

I pulled it off.

Three words.

WRONG FAMILY, BEAR.

My heart stopped.

Behind the door, Maya screamed.

“Bear!””

I kicked the door open.

And froze.

Maya stood in the corner.

Safe.

But beside her was a man.

Black jacket.

Calm expression.

An eagle tattoo on his forearm.

He looked at Cole.

Then at me.

And smiled.

“After all these years,” he said.

His eyes moved to Maya.

“You finally brought her home.””

Cole stepped forward.

“Darius.””

The man smiled wider.

“Hello, brother.””

And in that moment, I realized the mystery was bigger than Cole.

May you like

Because the man standing in front of us wasn’t hunting Maya.

He was claiming her.
