Chapter 5: The Brother I Never Knew

The photograph stayed on the table all night.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody needed to.

Everyone understood what it meant.

Someone had been close.

Too close.

Maya slept in the next room while two bikers guarded the hallway.

I sat alone with the picture.

YOU NEVER KNEW HIM.

The words bothered me because part of me believed them.

Cole and I were brothers.

At least that was what we called each other.

But brothers don’t disappear for twelve years.

Brothers don’t let you bury them in your mind.

Brothers don’t secretly have daughters.

Unless they are running from something bigger than themselves.

At sunrise, I rode to the old place.

The garage where Cole and I spent most of our lives.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Dust covered the windows.

The sign outside was faded.

COLE’S CUSTOM BIKES.

I pushed the door open.

The smell hit me immediately.

Oil.

Metal.

Old memories.

Everything inside was frozen in time.

The workbench.

The tools.

The chair where Cole always sat.

I walked slowly through the room.

My fingers touched the edge of the table.

“You should have told me.””

The words disappeared into the empty garage.

Then I heard something.

A sound.

A footstep.

I turned.

Nobody.

I reached for the weapon under my jacket.

“Come out.””

Silence.

Then a voice behind me.

“You still do that.””

I froze.

Because I knew the voice.

I turned slowly.

Cole stood in the doorway.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar running across his eyebrow.

But alive.

For twelve years, I imagined this moment.

I imagined punching him.

I imagined hugging him.

I imagined asking a thousand questions.

Instead, I just stared.

“You’re alive.””

Cole nodded.

“I am.””

I walked toward him.

Slowly.

Then I hit him.

Not hard enough to hurt him.

Hard enough for him to understand.

His head turned slightly.

He didn’t fight back.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let everyone think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You had a daughter.””

His eyes dropped.

“I know.””

The anger broke.

Not disappeared.

Broke.

Because behind all of it was pain.

“Why?””

Cole looked around the garage.

“At first, I thought leaving would protect you.””

“And?””

“And then every year I stayed away made it harder to come back.””

I stared at him.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It’s the truth.””

I hated that it sounded like him.

Because some part of me still remembered the brother I loved.

“What happened twelve years ago?””

Cole sat down.

For the first time, I saw how tired he looked.

Not physically.

Deeply.

Like he had been carrying something heavy for years.

“There was a group.””

“What group?””

“A security company.””

I frowned.

“Security?””

He nodded.

“They weren’t what they claimed.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means they did things nobody was supposed to know about.””

I crossed my arms.

“And you?””

Cole looked away.

“I found out.””

The room went quiet.

“How?””

“I worked with them.””

That sentence hit harder than expected.

“You worked for them?””

“For a short time.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I was trying to get information.””

“You never told me.””

“Because you would have helped.””

“Yes.””

“Exactly.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide whether I stand beside you.””

Cole looked at me.

“I wasn’t trying to save myself, Bear.””

“Then who?””

His eyes moved toward the door.

“Maya.””

I went still.

“They knew about her?””

Cole nodded.

“They knew before she was born.””

The anger returned.

“Who are they?””

“I don’t know who is still involved.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

He stood.

“You need to listen to me carefully.””

The seriousness in his voice made me stop.

“Maya cannot know everything yet.””

“She deserves the truth.””

“She deserves a childhood.””

I looked at him.

“You think hiding it gives her that?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I think keeping her alive gives her that.””

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture.

Cole and me.

Taken inside the garage.

Seconds ago.

My blood turned cold.

Cole saw my face.

“They found us.””

The garage lights flickered.

Outside, an engine started.

A vehicle.

Waiting.

Cole looked through the window.

Then whispered:

“Bear…”

“What?””

He looked afraid.

“The person who has been following Maya…”

May you like

A pause.

“It isn’t the person you think.””
