Chapter 1: The Day My Name Was Called Without Me

“Please! They’re calling my name!””

My fists were already bruised when I realized nobody was coming to open the door.

I stood inside my bedroom wearing my graduation gown, my cap sitting crooked on my head, my tears falling onto the blue fabric that was supposed to represent the happiest day of my life. Outside the locked door, I could hear the quiet hum of the hallway lights and the distant celebration downstairs.

My name was about to be announced.

Maya Johnson.

Eighteen years old.

Valedictorian.

The girl who had spent four years waking up before sunrise, studying until midnight, and believing every sacrifice would lead to this exact moment.

But I was trapped in my own room.

“Vanessa!”” I screamed, pressing my face close to the wooden door.

“Please! Just open it!””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then I heard the soft click of a key turning.

My heart jumped.

I thought she had changed her mind.

I thought my stepmother was finally going to let me walk across that stage.

Instead, Vanessa’s voice came through the door, calm and cold.

“You don’t deserve that stage.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“You heard me,” Vanessa said.

I could picture her standing there. Perfect hair. Cream blouse.

Gold jewelry. The same controlled smile she wore whenever other people were watching.

“But everyone is waiting,” I whispered.

“Dad is waiting.””

Her laugh was quiet.

“That’s exactly why you’re staying here.””

My fingers tightened around the edge of my gown.

“Why are you doing this?””

No answer.

I hit the door again.

“Vanessa, open this door!””

My voice cracked.

“I worked for this!””

The only response was the sound of her footsteps moving away.

I slid down against the door, trying not to fall apart.

My bedroom looked like a celebration someone had abandoned halfway through. Graduation balloons floated near the ceiling. A small cake sat untouched on my desk. My diploma folder was placed beside a bouquet of flowers my father had bought me.

Everything was ready.

Except me.

I looked toward the small security camera sitting near my desk.

Dad had installed it months ago after I told him I sometimes felt uncomfortable when he was away at work.

“It’s not because I don’t trust you,” Marcus had told me.

“It’s because I want you safe.””

At the time, I thought it was just another thing my protective father did.

Now I wondered if that camera had seen something I didn’t.

I wiped my face and stood up.

My hands were shaking.

I walked toward the camera, staring at the tiny blinking light.

“Dad,” I whispered.

“I hope you see this.””

Then the hallway exploded with noise.

A door slammed.

Heavy footsteps rushed toward my room.

“Maya!””

My eyes widened.

Dad.

“Dad!”” I screamed.

The footsteps stopped.

Then Marcus’s voice changed.

It wasn’t the warm voice I knew.

It was the voice of a man who had just discovered something was wrong.

“Why is this locked?””

I pressed my ear against the door.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa,” Marcus said.

“Why is my daughter’s door locked?””

A long pause followed.

“I was handling something,” Vanessa finally replied.

“Handling what?””

“She was being dramatic.””

My stomach twisted.

Dad never liked when someone called me dramatic.

The next sound came so suddenly that I jumped.

A crash.

Then another.

Marcus kicked the door.

The lock broke.

The door swung open.

For one second, nobody moved.

Dad stood there in his dark suit, breathing hard, staring at me in my graduation gown.

Then his expression changed.

All the anger disappeared.

Only fear remained.

“Maya.””

I ran into his arms.

“I thought nobody was coming,” I cried.

Marcus held me tightly.

“I’m here.””

Behind him, Vanessa stood frozen in the hallway.

She looked less like the woman who had locked me away.

She looked like someone who had just been caught.

Marcus pulled back and looked at me.

“What happened?””

I opened my mouth.

But before I could answer, my eyes moved toward the desk.

The camera.

“Dad…” I whispered.

He followed my gaze.

“Watch who she called.””

Vanessa’s face changed instantly.

And that was when I knew.

The locked door was never the biggest secret in the room.

The biggest secret was what happened before it closed.
