Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The message stayed on the screen.
*SHE KNOWS YOU LIED TOO.*
Five words.
Five words that turned my father and Vanessa into strangers standing in my bedroom.
Marcus read it again.
Then again.
Like the meaning might change the third time.
It didn’t.
“Who sent this?”” he asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Her silence was louder than any confession.
My father looked at her.
“You know.””
She swallowed.
“I have an idea.””
An idea.
That was the phrase she chose.
Not a name.
Not an explanation.
An idea.
I felt something inside me break.
“After everything today, you still can’t tell us the truth?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice was steadier than I expected.
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re worried about me.””
She lowered her eyes.
“I am worried about you.””
“Then why did you lock me away?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because I thought if you went to that ceremony, someone would find you.””
The words hit the room like a crash.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
He stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“It’s the truth.””
“You know enough to be scared.””
She looked toward the broken doorway.
“More than you realize.””
I watched my father’s jaw tighten.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa sat down slowly on the edge of my desk chair.
For the first time, she didn’t look elegant.
She looked exhausted.
“I met Elena before I met you.””
My heart stopped.
My mother.
Her name always felt like something fragile.
Something protected.
Hearing Vanessa say it felt wrong.
“What do you mean?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“She came to me.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
The room became silent.
I stepped closer.
“Afraid of what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Someone was looking for her.””
“Who?””
She shook her head.
“I never knew the name.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You expect us to believe this?””
“I don’t care if you believe me.””
Her voice cracked.
“I care that Maya survives.””
That sentence made my blood run cold.
Survives.
Not understands.
Not learns.
Survives.
Marcus noticed too.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa looked at the phone in his hand.
“The person sending those messages doesn’t want the truth revealed.””
“Then why are they telling us?””
“Because they want something.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation answered before her words did.
“Maya.””
I looked at her.
“What about me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with regret.
“They’re not after your father.””
Marcus went still.
“They’re after you.””
The room felt colder.
I wrapped my arms around myself.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
My father looked like he wanted to protect me but didn’t know from what.
Vanessa reached into her purse.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“What are you doing?””
“Something I should have done years ago.””
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
The edges were damaged.
My father stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Elena gave it to me.””
My breathing stopped.
“You knew my mother?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked down at the envelope.
“Because I was the last person she trusted.””
Marcus moved closer.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Elena made me promise.””
“A promise?””
“She said if anything happened to her, I had to protect Maya.””
I looked at the envelope.
My name wasn’t written on it.
But somehow I knew it was connected to me.
Marcus reached for it.
Vanessa pulled it back.
“No.””
His expression changed.
“Why?””
“Because Elena was clear.””
She looked at me.
“She said Maya had to open it when she was ready.””
I almost laughed.
“Ready?””
My voice shook.
“My entire life changed in one afternoon.””
Vanessa looked at me sadly.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed toward the locked door.
“You watched me cry behind that door.””
Her face collapsed.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because I received a message this morning.””
Marcus froze.
“What message?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“The same person who just contacted us told me they knew about the envelope.””
My father went silent.
“What did they say?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
Like she was afraid someone might be listening.
“They said if Maya left for graduation, they would make sure the truth came out in the worst possible way.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“So you trapped me to protect me?””
“Yes.””
“By hurting me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I had no choice.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You always had a choice.””
The guilt on Vanessa’s face was immediate.
Then my father’s phone buzzed.
Again.
Nobody wanted to look.
But we all did.
A new message.
This time, there was a photo attached.
Marcus opened it.
And the second he saw the image, he dropped the phone slightly.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
His face was completely drained.
Because the picture wasn’t of Vanessa.
It wasn’t of the envelope.
It was of my mother.
May you like
And beside Elena stood someone I recognized.
Someone who had been in our lives for years.
