Chapter 2: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

Marcus walked slowly toward the desk.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Vanessa stayed near the broken doorway, her fingers gripping the edge of her blouse.

“Maya,” Marcus said quietly, “what do you mean, watch who she called?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at me.

For the first time since she married my father, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

“She’s confused,” Vanessa said quickly.

Marcus didn’t even turn around.

“Don’t answer for her.””

The sharpness in his voice made Vanessa go silent.

I swallowed.

“I woke up this morning and everything was normal,” I said.

“She helped me get ready. She told me she was proud of me.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Then she started asking questions.””

“What kind of questions?”” Marcus asked.

“About my graduation money.””

The room went still.

Marcus slowly looked back at me.

“My graduation money?””

I nodded.

“She asked if the school had already sent it. She asked if I had signed anything.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That is not what happened.””

Marcus raised his hand.

“Stop.””

Just one word.

But Vanessa stopped.

I had never seen my father speak to her like that before.

He picked up the small camera.

“Why would you tell me to watch who she called?””

“Because I heard her,” I said.

My voice became smaller.

“Last night.””

Marcus looked at me.

“You heard what?””

I stared at the floor.

“I couldn’t sleep. I heard Vanessa talking in the hallway.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You were spying?””

“No,” I said.

“I was trying to figure out why she was whispering about me.””

Marcus connected the camera to his phone.

A few seconds passed.

The screen loaded.

My heartbeat became louder.

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Marcus, maybe we should not do this right now.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you’re upset.””

“No,” he said.

“I’m listening.””

The recording appeared.

A timeline.

A saved audio file from earlier that morning.

Marcus pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“She’s trapped.””

My body froze.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

The recording continued.

“Start the transfer before her father gets here.””

Silence.

The kind of silence that hurts.

Marcus stopped moving.

I watched his face change.

He didn’t look angry anymore.

He looked confused.

Like his mind was trying to understand something his heart refused to accept.

Vanessa stared at the phone.

“No.””

It was barely a whisper.

Marcus looked at her.

“Maya was right.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I can explain.””

“Then explain why you locked my daughter in her room.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I stood behind my father, holding onto his jacket.

The recording sat frozen on the screen.

One sentence.

One voice.

One question.

What transfer?

Marcus played the audio again.

The same words filled the room.

“She’s trapped. Start the transfer before her father gets here.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Am I?””

Her eyes moved toward his phone.

Not toward me.

Not toward him.

The phone.

That was when my father noticed.

“You’re not worried about the recording,” he said.

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You’re worried about what’s on the phone.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus lowered the device.

“What else did you do?””

Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Not today.””

Outside the room, my graduation ceremony continued without me.

The world was still moving.

People were still smiling.

My classmates were still walking across the stage.

But inside that bedroom, everything had changed.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“What transfer?””

May you like

Her face went pale.

And for the first time, Vanessa looked like she was the one trapped.
