Chapter 12: The Night Everyone Lost Elena
Daniel sat down.
Nobody told him to.
Nobody asked him.
He simply sat because his legs seemed unable to hold him anymore.
The man who always seemed confident.
The man who had answers.
The man everyone trusted.
Looked broken.
Marcus stood across from him.
“Start talking.””
Daniel stared at the floor.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
Marcus’s voice was cold.
“You should have.””
I stood beside my father.
Waiting.
Because I had waited my entire life.
Daniel took a breath.
“The night Elena disappeared…”
He stopped.
His hands shook.
“She called me.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she was scared.””
“Of who?””
He looked away.
“Your grandfather.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked stunned.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father knew about Elena’s investigation.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“It isn’t.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother found evidence that someone had been altering records for years.””
“Records about what?””
Daniel swallowed.
“About people.””
The answer confused me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone had been changing identities.””
The room went still.
“Identities?””
Daniel nodded.
“Names. Birth information. Family connections.””
I looked at the key.
The number.
The letter.
Everything.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Because some people are worth more than others to them.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“Explain.””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your father was involved in something.””
“Involved how?””
“I don’t know everything.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Everyone knows something except me.””
Daniel accepted that.
“You were supposed to be protected.””
Marcus looked at me.
“By lying to me?””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“By keeping you away from the people involved.””
A silence followed.
Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.
“Did you hurt my mother?””
Daniel looked at me.
The pain in his face answered before his words.
“No.””
I wanted to believe him.
But I didn’t know who to trust anymore.
“I found her.””
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You found Elena?””
Daniel nodded.
“The night she disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
“She was alive?””
“Yes.””
My knees felt weak.
“Where did she go?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“She left because she knew someone was coming.””
“Who?””
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stared.
“You expect us to believe you?””
“I was there.””
“Then tell us.””
Daniel looked at me.
“She gave me something.””
“What?””
“The key.””
My eyes moved toward the silver key.
“You had it?””
Daniel nodded.
“She told me to keep it safe.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
His face broke.
“Because someone found me first.””
The room went quiet.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered:
“The person who has been sending these messages.””
A chill moved through me.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Name.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“Name!””
“I DON’T KNOW!””
The shout echoed through the room.
Daniel covered his face.
“I never saw their face.””
Everyone went silent.
Then my father’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
Marcus looked down.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He handed me the phone.
I didn’t want to look.
But I did.
The message contained one sentence.
*ASK MARCUS WHY HE WASN’T YOUR FATHER WHEN ELENA LEFT.*
I stared at the screen.
The words made no sense.
Then I looked at my father.
He looked terrified.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His eyes filled.
“Maya…”
I stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at the key.
Then at the letter.
Then at me.
And finally, after eighteen years of silence, he said the words that changed everything.
“I wasn’t the only person Elena was trying to protect you from.””
A pause.
“She was trying to protect you from the truth about me too.””
The room went completely still.
And for the first time…
May you like
I wondered if the biggest secret in my family wasn’t who my real father was.
It was why everyone was so desperate to hide it.
