Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Silence
For the first time in my life, I didn’t recognize my father.
Marcus stood in front of me holding a phone that had just shattered everything I thought I knew.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who stayed awake when I was sick.
The man who told me every morning that I was stronger than I believed.
That same man had been carrying a secret.
A secret about my mother.
A secret about me.
“Maya,” he said softly.
I looked away.
“No.””
He stopped.
“I know you’re hurt.””
“You don’t know.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your whole life might be a lie.””
Marcus looked down.
“I never wanted this.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Maya, please understand—”
I turned toward her.
“You don’t get to ask me to understand.””
She went silent.
Because she knew I was right.
“You locked me in my room.””
Her face dropped.
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
Those words hit harder than shouting.
Marcus closed his eyes.
The room became quiet.
Then he walked toward the desk and placed the phone down.
“I owe you the truth.””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
He nodded slowly.
“You do.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Marcus…”
“No more secrets.””
Something about the way he said it made Vanessa afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Marcus sat down.
For the first time, he looked tired.
Older.
Like the weight of eighteen years had finally caught up with him.
“Your mother’s name was Elena.””
I knew that.
I had heard it thousands of times.
But hearing him say it now felt different.
“She was the most stubborn person I ever knew,” he continued.
A small smile appeared.
“She would argue with anyone if she believed she was right.””
My eyes softened despite myself.
Because that was the part of my mother I knew from stories.
“She loved you more than anything.””
“Then why did she leave?””
Marcus looked down.
“She didn’t.””
The room stopped.
“What?””
His eyes met mine.
“Your mother didn’t leave you.””
My heart started racing.
“Then what happened?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa suddenly whispered:
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not like this.””
He stood.
“You wanted to handle it your way.””
Her face fell.
“Because I was trying to protect her.””
Marcus pointed toward me.
“She deserved to know.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“Your mother discovered something.””
My hands became cold.
“About what?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation scared me more than the answer.
“About your birth.””
I stared at him.
“My birth?””
Marcus nodded.
“There were things she found out after you were born.””
“What things?””
He looked toward the camera on the desk.
The small blinking light.
The same camera that had started all of this.
“Things someone wanted hidden.””
My breathing became shallow.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
And that silence told me everything.
Someone else was involved.
Someone who had been watching.
Someone who had been waiting.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.
Marcus noticed.
“Where are you going?””
She froze.
“I need to leave.””
“No.””
Her eyes widened.
“Marcus.””
“You’re not walking away from this.””
She looked toward the door.
Then back at me.
“Maya…”
I expected another excuse.
Another lie.
Instead, she whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Then her phone buzzed.
Again.
Everyone looked at it.
Another message.
Marcus picked it up before she could.
His eyes scanned the screen.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I stood.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
Slowly, he turned the phone around.
The message was from the same unknown number.
This time there were only five words.
*SHE KNOWS YOU LIED TOO.*
My stomach dropped.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
And suddenly, I realized something terrifying.
The person who had been controlling the secrets in my family…

Was not afraid of being discovered.
They were waiting for us to find them.
