Chapter 13: The Truth Marcus Buried

The words stayed in the air.

“I wasn’t the only person Elena was trying to protect you from.””

My father looked like he wished he could take them back.

But some words don’t disappear.

They become the thing you remember forever.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked down.

For the first time, I didn’t see my father.

I saw a man carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need you to stop saying my name like that fixes everything.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

Nobody moved.

Not Vanessa.

Not Daniel.

Not even the person who had been sending the messages.

For once, everyone was waiting for Marcus.

He sat down slowly.

“I met your mother when we were young.””

I nodded.

“I know that story.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You know the version I wanted you to know.””

My chest tightened.

“She changed my life.””

His voice softened.

“Elena was smarter than anyone I knew. She noticed things people ignored.””

He looked at the key.

“She noticed things about me.””

“What things?””

Marcus took a long breath.

“When I was younger, I worked for your grandfather.””

I frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“Doing what?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Security.””

Daniel looked away.

I noticed.

“You all knew.””

Nobody denied it.

Marcus continued.

“I thought I was protecting people.””

“From what?””

“From threats.””

He looked at his hands.

“But I didn’t ask enough questions.””

The room became quiet.

“Your grandfather had connections. Money. Influence.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I didn’t know how far it went.””

“And Mom found out?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the photograph.

“She discovered what he was doing?””

Marcus nodded.

“She discovered that he had been manipulating records.””

My heart raced.

“Changing identities?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because some people wanted to disappear.””

The answer was terrifying.

“Your grandfather helped powerful people erase pieces of their past.””

Daniel added quietly:

“And Elena found proof.””

I looked at him.

“So why did she trust you?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because Marcus was the only person she believed could stop it.””

My father looked away.

“But I didn’t.””

The pain in his voice was worse than anger.

“I thought I could fix everything quietly.””

“Like Vanessa?””

The question hit him.

“Yes.””

I saw him flinch.

“I became the same kind of person I hated.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Yes.””

His eyes filled.

“I made decisions for you without giving you a choice.””

The room went silent.

“I was afraid.””

I whispered:

“You were afraid of losing me.””

He nodded.

“I already lost your mother.””

A tear moved down his face.

“I couldn’t lose you too.””

For a moment, I saw my father again.

Not the person hiding secrets.

The person who held my hand through every nightmare.

But the truth still hurt.

“What happened the night she disappeared?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Tell her.””

Marcus looked down.

“Elena discovered your grandfather was planning something bigger.””

“What?””

“She found records showing he was connected to a network of people changing identities.””

My stomach turned.

“And me?””

Marcus looked at me.

“You were part of the reason she was searching.””

I froze.

“Why?””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out an old folded document.

“I kept this because I couldn’t destroy it.””

I opened it.

The paper was old.

Official.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

A name.

A different name.

My birth information had been altered.

My hands started shaking.

“Who was I?””

Marcus looked at me.

“You were always Maya.””

“But this says—”

I couldn’t finish.

Daniel stepped closer.

“The record was changed before Elena found it.””

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“By your grandfather.””

The room froze.

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Elena told me.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because she made me promise.””

I looked at her.

“She trusted you.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And I failed her.””

The words hung there.

Then my father’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

Marcus opened it.

This time there was no warning.

No threat.

Only an address.

And a sentence.

*THE PLACE WHERE ELENA LEFT THE LAST TRUTH.*

Daniel saw it.

His face changed.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know that place.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Maya,” Marcus said.

I looked at him.

“I’m going.””

His expression changed.

“No.””

“I spent eighteen years not knowing.””

“Maya.””

“I’m done being protected.””

He stared at me.

Then slowly nodded.

Because he knew.

May you like

The little girl he protected was gone.

And the daughter standing in front of him needed the truth.
