Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Smile
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
Not me.
Even Daniel seemed surprised by the weight of his own words.
The hallway felt too quiet.
Like the entire house was waiting for someone to finally tell the truth.
I stared at the man standing a few feet away.
The same man who taught me how to throw a baseball.
The same man who showed up at my school plays.
The same man who told me after my mother died that I would always have family.
“You?””
My voice barely came out.
Daniel looked at me.
And somehow that hurt more than anger would have.
Because he looked guilty.
Not confused.
Not offended.
Guilty.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to say my name like that.””
His face tightened.
Marcus moved between us.
“You have five seconds to explain why my daughter’s mother was afraid of you.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I never wanted Elena to be afraid.””
“Then why was she?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was all my father needed.
He grabbed Daniel’s jacket.
“Why?””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
His voice shook with anger.
“No more excuses.””
Daniel didn’t fight back.
He just looked tired.
“You think I’m the villain.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You walked into my house after sending that picture.””
“I didn’t send the picture.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward the phone.
“The person contacting you isn’t me.””
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked at me.
And that look made my stomach twist.
“Someone who wants me exposed.””
I almost laughed.
“Convenient.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“You have every right to hate me.””
“Good.””
The word came out immediately.
“Because I do.””
The silence after that was painful.
Marcus looked at me.
Then back at Daniel.
“Tell us what happened.””
Daniel took a slow breath.
“I met Elena years before you knew about me.””
“I know,” Marcus said.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t know everything.””
He looked at the photograph still sitting on the desk.
“Elena came to me because she discovered something about your family.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father.””
The room froze.
I looked at Marcus.
“My grandfather?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
“What does my grandfather have to do with this?””
Marcus looked away.
I noticed.
A small movement.
But I noticed.
“You knew something.””
Marcus’s eyes closed.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Everybody keeps saying my life is complicated like that makes it okay.””
Nobody spoke.
“I deserve to know.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“You do.””
Daniel walked toward the desk.
Marcus immediately blocked him.
“Stay where you are.””
Daniel stopped.
“Fine.””
He looked at me.
“Elena found documents that suggested someone had changed records connected to your birth.””
My heart started racing.
“Changed what records?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Your original birth records.””
The room spun.
“No.””
The word came out before I could think.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother believed someone was trying to erase something.””
“Erase what?””
He looked at me.
“The truth about who your biological father was.””
Nobody breathed.
I looked at Marcus.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me everything.
My father.
Not my biological father?
I waited for him to deny it.
To laugh.
To tell me Daniel was lying.
But Marcus didn’t.
And that silence destroyed something inside me.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
His eyes filled.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“It isn’t.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel looked down.
The truth had finally arrived.
And nobody looked relieved.
Only broken.
I walked toward the window.
The graduation decorations reflected in the glass.
The blue gown.
The cap.
The person I thought I was.
Everything felt borrowed.
“Maya,” Marcus said.
I turned.
“Did you know?””
His face collapsed.
“Know what?””
“That I wasn’t yours?””
The question hung there.
Marcus looked like I had physically hurt him.
“You are my daughter.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He swallowed.
“I knew there was a possibility.””
My eyes filled.
“How long?””
“Maya—”
“How long?””
He whispered.
“Since you were six.””
The room disappeared.
Since I was six.
Six years old.
A child.
And everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.
I laughed quietly.
It wasn’t happiness.
It was disbelief.
“So my entire childhood was a secret?””
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Your childhood was love.””
“But built on a lie.””
He had no answer.
Daniel spoke softly.
“Elena wanted you to know when you were ready.””
I looked at him.
“She trusted you?””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
“Then why did she hide from you?””
That question finally broke him.
Daniel looked away.
“Because I failed her.””
Marcus stared.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“It means Elena discovered something about my family too.””
“Your family?””
He nodded.
“And she found out I was connected to it.””
The phone on the desk suddenly buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
Marcus picked it up.
The sender was unknown.
But this time, there was a video attached.
Daniel saw it.
And his entire face changed.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The video preview showed an old recording.
A woman.
A familiar face.
Elena.
My mother.
May you like
Alive.
And speaking.
