Chapter 4: The Message That Changed Everything
The message was only three words.
But those three words changed the way my father looked at Vanessa forever.
Marcus stared at his phone screen.
His thumb hovered above it.
He didn’t move.
He didn’t blink.
“Dad?”” I whispered.
He looked up slowly.
“Go sit down, Maya.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
That was the voice he used when something was seriously wrong.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Focused.
I sat on the edge of my bed, still wearing my graduation gown. The same gown I had planned to wear while walking across a stage in front of hundreds of people.
Now it felt like a costume from another life.
Vanessa remained near the doorway.
She looked smaller than she had five minutes ago.
“Marcus,” she said quietly.
“Before you read that, you need to understand something.””
He finally looked at her.
“Why?””
Her mouth opened.
“Because—”
“Because you think I’ll be angry?””
She looked away.
“No.””
“Because you think I’ll leave?””
The silence answered.
My father shook his head slowly.
“I don’t even know who I’m standing in front of right now.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“That’s not fair.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“Fair?””
He pointed toward the broken door.
“My daughter missed her graduation because of you.””
Vanessa flinched.
“I didn’t want her to miss it.””
“Then why was she locked inside?””
“I was trying to buy time.””
The words came out before she could stop them.
Everyone froze.
Marcus lowered his phone.
“Buy time for what?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
And somehow that scared me more.
She took a breath.
“You need to let me explain.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Then explain.””
Vanessa looked toward the camera on the desk.
“The recording doesn’t tell the whole story.””
I stood up.
“You said I was trapped.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“Maya—”
“No.””
My voice shook, but I didn’t stop.
“You said someone should start something before Dad got here.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“You weren’t supposed to hear that.””
The room went silent.
My father’s expression hardened.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus took one step forward.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell us everything.
Instead, she whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.””
My father’s face changed.
“Protect me from what?””
No answer.
Just the sound of her breathing.
Then Marcus looked back at the phone.
He opened the message.
I couldn’t see the screen.
But I saw his face.
The anger disappeared.
Something worse replaced it.
Shock.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“Maya…”
I walked closer.
“What is it?””
He turned the phone slightly.
The message was from an unknown number.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Only a warning.
*YOU NEED TO KNOW WHO YOUR DAUGHTER REALLY IS.*
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
“Don’t listen to that.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent that wants to destroy us.””
Marcus stared at her.
“And how do you know that?””
Vanessa froze.
A mistake.
A tiny mistake.
But my father noticed.
“Answer me.””
She looked down.
“I just know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Her hands started shaking.
“I was trying to handle this quietly.””
“Handle what?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For a second, she looked exhausted.
Not like a villain.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
Then she opened her eyes.
“Maya was never supposed to find out today.””
My blood ran cold.
“Find out what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And I saw something I never expected.
Pity.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt more than anything.
Because they meant she knew something about me.
Something I didn’t know myself.
Marcus stepped between us.
“Stop talking in circles.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You have to believe me.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“Not until you tell me the truth.””
She looked at the phone in his hand.
Then at the camera.
Then at me.
Finally, she whispered:
“Ask your daughter what happened eighteen years ago.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Marcus turned toward me.
Confusion crossed his face.
“Maya?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””
Vanessa looked like she wanted to say more.
But she stopped.
Her phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked toward it.
The screen lit up.
The name appeared.
And the moment Marcus saw it, his entire expression changed.
Because he recognized the person calling.
Vanessa reached for the phone.
Marcus grabbed it first.
“Who is this?””
She went pale.
“Marcus, don’t answer.””
May you like
The phone kept ringing.
And on the screen was a name neither of us expected to see.
