Chapter 9: The Letter Elena Left Behind

The paper shook in my father’s hand.

I had never seen Marcus afraid before.

Not when he lost his job.

Not when my mother disappeared.

Not even when doctors told him I had been sick as a child.

But now?

Now he looked terrified.

“Read it,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Maya.””

“Read it.””

Vanessa moved closer.

“Maybe we should think first.””

I looked at her.

“No more thinking.””

My voice broke.

“No more protecting me with lies.””

Nobody argued.

Marcus unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was old.

Careful.

Beautiful.

A handwriting I had never seen before.

My mother’s.

He took a breath.

Then he began.

“Dear Maya…”

The sound of her name from his mouth nearly broke me.

“Not a day has passed where I haven’t wondered if you would forgive me.””

I covered my mouth.

My mother had written to me.

A person I barely remembered.

A person I thought I lost forever.

Marcus continued.

“If you are reading this, then the people who promised to protect you have failed.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked down.

Marcus stopped for a second.

Then continued.

“I need you to understand something. Your father loved you more than anything. But love can make people afraid. Fear can make people make terrible choices.””

My father closed his eyes.

The words hurt him.

“Your father is not the person you should fear.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then back at the letter.

“Someone else wanted to control your future before you were old enough to choose it.””

My hands became cold.

Marcus kept reading.

“When you were born, I discovered information that could change everything.””

He stopped.

“Everything?””

Vanessa whispered.

Marcus kept going.

“I discovered that someone close to us had been hiding the truth about your identity.””

The room seemed to tilt.

My identity.

The phrase repeated in my mind.

Who was I?

“Mom…”

I whispered the word without realizing it.

Marcus looked at me.

I looked away.

The letter continued.

“I wanted to tell Marcus immediately. But I learned something that scared me.””

My father held his breath.

“She was afraid of me?””

“No,” Vanessa said quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“Elena trusted Marcus.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa stared at the letter.

“She was afraid of what would happen to him if he knew.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

Or because she did.

I couldn’t tell anymore.

My father continued reading.

“I created a plan. A way to protect Maya if something happened to me.””

The words blurred.

Something happened to me.

Not if I left.

Not if I moved away.

Something happened.

“She knew,” Marcus whispered.

He looked devastated.

“She knew she was in danger.””

A new sound came from downstairs.

A car door.

Everyone froze.

Marcus folded the letter immediately.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

My answer surprised him.

I stood.

“I’m done staying behind doors.””

For a second, he looked at me.

Then he nodded.

A sad, proud kind of nod.

Like he realized I wasn’t the little girl he had been protecting anymore.

Vanessa moved toward the hallway.

“Don’t.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know who it is.””

Her face went pale.

“I think so.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

The front door opened downstairs.

A familiar voice called out.

“Marcus?””

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Everyone did.

Daniel.

My father’s best friend.

The man in the photograph.

The man who had known my mother.

The man who had been missing from the story until now.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

Daniel walked closer.

“Why is nobody answering?””

His footsteps approached.

Slow.

Confident.

Like he belonged there.

Like he had always belonged there.

Then he appeared at the end of the hallway.

His eyes moved from Marcus.

To Vanessa.

To me.

And finally to the letter in my father’s hand.

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Daniel stopped.

“You found it.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the letter.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time in my life…

The man I called Uncle looked at me like I was not a child.

Like I was evidence.

“You weren’t supposed to find out this way,” he said.

My heart pounded.

“Find out what?””

Daniel took a breath.

Then he said the words that made my entire world collapse.

“Maya…”

He looked directly at me.

“Your mother was not hiding you from someone else.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was hiding you from me.””
