Chapter 1: The Envelope Under the Flowers

“Get out of my wedding!””

The scream cut through the music before anyone could understand what was happening.

Brielle Carter stood beside the white wedding arch, both hands locked around a garden hose, spraying a violent stream of water directly into Evelyn Walker’s face and champagne-colored suit. The roses above them trembled from the force of the spray. Guests who had been laughing seconds earlier froze with their champagne glasses halfway to their lips.

Evelyn, the groom’s mother, didn’t move.

Water ran down her silver-streaked hair, soaked through her elegant skirt suit, and dripped from her fingertips. Her expression wasn’t anger.

It was shock.

“Brielle!”” one guest shouted.

“What are you doing?””

But Brielle didn’t lower the hose.

“You heard me,” she snapped.

“Get out of my wedding!””

Marcus Walker, the groom, had been standing near the marriage table when he heard the commotion. He rushed across the lawn, his black tuxedo jacket catching the sunlight as he pushed through the crowd.

“Brielle, stop!”” Marcus yelled.

She finally released the trigger. The water stopped, leaving only the sound of dripping flowers and stunned whispers.

Marcus stepped between his bride and his mother.

“Mom,” he said, his voice low and embarrassed, “just leave.””

Evelyn slowly wiped water from her eyes.

For a moment, she looked at her son like she was seeing a stranger.

“You’re defending her,” Evelyn said quietly, “without knowing who you’re marrying.””

The words landed harder than the hose.

Brielle’s furious expression shifted.

Only for a second.

But Marcus noticed.

“What are you talking about?”” he asked.

Brielle immediately grabbed his arm.

“Don’t listen to her,” she said.

“She’s trying to ruin today.””

The guests began murmuring. Some looked at Evelyn with sympathy. Others looked at Brielle, confused by the sudden explosion during what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

Marcus frowned.

“Mom, what are you doing?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she pulled out a sealed legal envelope.

The kind used by attorneys.

The kind that carried documents no one wanted opened at a wedding.

Brielle’s face changed.

The anger disappeared.

Her lips parted slightly.

Marcus noticed.

“Brielle?”” he whispered.

She stepped backward.

“Don’t.””

Evelyn held the envelope tightly.

“I begged myself not to do this today,” she said.

“I told myself it wasn’t my place. I told myself Marcus deserved happiness.””

Her eyes moved toward her son.

“But I couldn’t watch him promise forever to someone who already broke that promise.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn opened the envelope.

The paper inside made a sharp sound as it unfolded.

She pulled out an official marriage record.

The garden suddenly felt silent.

No music.

No laughter.

Only the sound of the wind moving through the flowers.

Evelyn handed the document to Marcus.

His fingers trembled as he took it.

“Marcus…” Brielle said quickly.

He looked down.

Then his eyes moved across the page.

His face slowly changed.

The confusion disappeared.

The disbelief arrived.

“Brielle…” he whispered.

She swallowed.

“Marcus, let me explain.””

He looked back at the document.

“Your name is already on this.””

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Brielle lunged forward.

“Give me that!””

Marcus stepped away, holding the paper against his chest.

“You told me you were never married.””

The accusation wasn’t loud.

That made it worse.

Brielle looked around at the guests, searching for an escape from all the eyes on her.

Evelyn stood beside her son, soaked from the water but completely steady.

Then she looked directly at Brielle.

And said the one sentence that turned a wedding into a mystery.

“Her husband is here.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

Slowly, he looked around the garden.

At the guests.

At the family members.

At every face wearing formal clothes and confused expressions.

May you like

Brielle froze.

And for the first time that day, everyone saw fear on the bride’s face.
