Chapter 14: The Last Hidden Truth

“Mom?””

Marcus’s voice was barely above a whisper.

The garden that had been filled with accusations suddenly became silent.

Evelyn stood completely still.

For years, Marcus had known his mother as the strongest person in his life.

The person who handled every crisis.

The person who always had an answer.

But now she looked like someone who had been caught carrying a secret too heavy to hide.

“Evelyn,” Daniel said quietly.

She closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“I didn’t want this to happen here.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s what you’re worried about?””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“I’m worried about what this does to you.””

He shook his head.

“You already knew.””

Evelyn looked down.

“Yes.””

The word was devastating.

Marcus stepped back.

“How much?””

She took a breath.

“I knew Brielle was struggling.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I knew about the account.””

The guests reacted immediately.

Marcus felt numb.

“You knew?””

“I found out after the transfer request.””

“And you waited?””

“I was trying to understand.””

He stared at her.

“Understand what?””

Evelyn looked at Brielle.

“Whether she was using you.””

Brielle looked hurt.

“You thought that?””

Evelyn answered honestly.

“I didn’t know what to think.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“So everyone had questions about my life except me.””

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“There’s more.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Of course there was.

“There’s always more.””

She looked at him.

“The account wasn’t created under Brielle’s name.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

“What?””

Evelyn looked toward the document.

“It was created using a company account.””

Marcus frowned.

“My company?””

She nodded.

“But the authorization…”

She stopped.

Marcus noticed.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at the signature.

“That’s why I knew something was wrong.””

She picked up the document.

“The signature is yours.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“But the authorization code isn’t.””

Silence.

Tasha stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at everyone.

“It means someone copied Marcus’s signature.””

Marcus stared.

Someone had forged his approval.

Someone had made it look like he agreed.

He looked at Brielle.

“Was it you?””

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

This time, Marcus believed she was telling the truth.

Because her reaction was different.

She looked shocked too.

Caleb stepped forward.

“It wasn’t her.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked at him.

“How do you know?””

Caleb looked ashamed.

“Because it was me.””

The confession was quiet.

But it changed everything.

Brielle covered her mouth.

“Caleb…”

He looked at his sister.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus stared.

“You forged my signature?””

Caleb nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor threatened us.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the wedding around him.

“No, you don’t get to say that like it makes everything okay.””

“I know.””

Caleb’s voice broke.

“I know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You should have gone to the police.””

Caleb looked down.

“I was afraid.””

Marcus looked at him.

“And you thought destroying my life was easier?””

Caleb had no answer.

Brielle started crying.

“I should have stopped him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, she wasn’t defending herself.

She was accepting it.

A long silence passed.

Then Victor’s voice came through the phone.

“You’re all wasting time blaming each other.””

Marcus picked it up.

“You’re next.””

Victor laughed.

“You think this ends with me?””

Marcus looked around.

“What else?””

Victor answered:

“The account wasn’t just about money.””

A pause.

“It was about control.””

Marcus frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor continued.

“Brielle was supposed to marry you.””

Marcus looked at her.

Victor continued.

“Then she would have access to everything.””

Brielle shook her head.

“No.””

Victor ignored her.

“But she changed.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Changed?””

“Yes.””

Victor’s voice became quieter.

“She started loving you.””

The garden went still.

Even Brielle looked shocked.

Victor continued.

“That’s why she became a problem.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“You stopped following his plan?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Her voice trembled.

“At first, I thought I could fix everything.””

A tear fell.

“Then I actually fell in love with you.””

Marcus didn’t speak.

Victor continued.

“And that’s why I had to make sure the wedding happened.””

Evelyn frowned.

“What?””

Victor laughed.

“Because after today, everything would belong to her.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What?””

Victor said:

“The marriage contract.””

Everyone looked toward the wedding table.

The documents.

The signatures.

The final agreement.

Marcus walked toward it.

His heart pounding.

He picked up the contract.

Then he saw it.

A clause.

Hidden in the legal language.

A transfer.

A condition.

A trap.

His voice went quiet.

“She wasn’t trying to marry me.””

He looked at Brielle.

“She was trying to save me.””

Everyone froze.

May you like

Because for the first time all day…

The truth was not what anyone expected.
