Chapter 7: The Signature That Wasn’t Supposed to Exist

Marcus stared at the page in Evelyn’s hand.

His own name stared back at him.

The letters were unmistakable.

The signature looked like his.

The curve of the M.

The sharp ending of the last letter.

The same handwriting he had used on contracts, checks, and every important document in his adult life.

But he had never seen this paper before.

He stepped closer.

“Give me that.””

Evelyn handed it over.

Marcus read the heading again.

His face tightened.

“This is impossible.””

Brielle stood several feet away, frozen.

Daniel watched Marcus carefully.

Andre lowered his phone.

Even the guests who had been whispering moments earlier fell silent.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus noticed.

“Why did you say no before I even asked the question?””

Brielle opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Evelyn looked at the document.

“This is a legal authorization form.””

Marcus kept reading.

The words blurred together.

Authorization.

Financial agreement.

Consent.

His stomach turned.

“This says I approved something.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Approved what?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He looked at the bottom of the page.

There it was.

His signature.

And beneath it, a date.

A date from six months earlier.

Six months before the wedding.

Six months after he met Brielle.

Marcus slowly looked up.

“You said you never needed anything from me.””

Brielle’s expression changed.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why is my signature on a document connected to you?””

Her eyes moved toward the paper.

For a second, fear crossed her face.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Marcus noticed.

“Brielle.””

She looked at him.

“I can explain.””

The phrase sounded empty now.

He almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Brielle stepped closer.

“Please. Just listen.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I’ve been listening all day.””

His voice lowered.

“I listened when you said you had never been married.””

A pause.

“I listened when you said Daniel was lying.””

Another pause.

“I listened when you said you didn’t know Andre.””

Andre looked away.

Marcus held up the document.

“And now I’m supposed to listen while you explain why my name is on something I’ve never seen?””

Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then Evelyn.

Then Marcus.

“I was trying to fix my life.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not an answer.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She was trying to erase her past.””

Brielle turned sharply.

“You don’t know that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I know you asked me for a divorce after you already started planning a new life.””

Marcus stared.

“Planning?””

Brielle closed her eyes.

Daniel continued.

“She didn’t just hide the marriage.””

He pointed toward the document.

“She hid what happened when she realized Marcus had money.””

The garden went silent.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“What does that mean?””

Brielle’s voice became defensive.

“That’s cruel.””

“Is it false?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus looked down at the paper again.

“What is this?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Andre finally said:

“It’s a power of attorney.””

Marcus turned.

“A what?””

Andre looked uncomfortable.

“Brielle asked me to help prepare documents.””

Brielle glared at him.

“You promised you wouldn’t say anything.””

Andre looked hurt.

“You promised Marcus would never find out this way.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“How many people were involved?””

No one answered.

He looked at Evelyn.

“Mom.””

She stepped closer.

“I found this because the attorney who prepared the envelope sent me copies.””

Marcus frowned.

“What attorney?””

Evelyn reached into her handbag again.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

“I was contacted two weeks ago.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Two weeks?””

She nodded.

“Someone believed you were being manipulated.””

Brielle’s face hardened.

“Someone who doesn’t know the truth.””

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“Then why did you never tell Marcus about the documents?””

Brielle looked away.

The answer was obvious.

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

The wedding music still played faintly from the speakers.

A song chosen for a moment that would never happen.

He opened his eyes.

“Did you use my identity?””

Brielle immediately responded.

“No.””

Marcus looked at the document.

“Then why does this exist?””

She whispered.

“Because…”

Everyone waited.

“Because I thought I could handle it.””

Marcus stared.

“Handle what?””

Brielle looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked truly afraid.

“The debt.””

The word changed everything.

Marcus frowned.

“What debt?””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“She didn’t tell you.””

Brielle turned toward him.

“Stop.””

Daniel ignored her.

“She left me because she was drowning.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“How much?””

She didn’t answer.

Evelyn looked at the document.

Then quietly said:

“Marcus, you need to see the next page.””

Marcus turned the paper over.

His fingers stopped.

Because the next page contained a list of accounts.

Accounts connected to him.

Accounts he had never shared with anyone.

His breathing slowed.

The question wasn’t whether Brielle had lied.

He already knew.

The question was how much she had taken while he believed she loved him.

Then Marcus saw one final line at the bottom.

A transfer request.

Pending approval.

Scheduled for the day after the wedding.

His wedding day.

His blood went cold.

“Brielle…”

She looked at him.

“What?””

May you like

Marcus lifted the page.

“Why was my money supposed to move tomorrow?””
