Chapter 10: The Brother Who Knew Everything

“Caleb…”

Brielle’s voice barely escaped her lips.

The name traveled through the garden like a warning.

Marcus turned slowly.

A man stood near the edge of the guests, wearing a dark suit that looked slightly too formal for someone trying to blend into the background. He was older than Brielle by a few years, with tired eyes and a face that carried the weight of someone who had spent too long running from consequences.

He didn’t look surprised.

He looked caught.

Marcus stared at him.

“You’re her brother?””

Caleb nodded once.

“Yes.””

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“You knew he was here?””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

But this time, nobody believed her.

Not even her.

Caleb stepped forward.

“I came because I knew this would happen.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the documents.

“What would happen?””

Caleb looked around the wedding.

“The truth would finally come out.””

Brielle moved toward him.

“Why are you doing this?””

Caleb looked at his sister.

“I’m tired.””

Her expression changed.

“Caleb.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I’m tired of cleaning up after choices I didn’t make.””

The guests watched silently.

Marcus looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Caleb looked at Marcus.

“It means she’s right about one thing.””

A pause.

“She needed money because of me.””

Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.

“Stop.””

Caleb ignored her.

“She didn’t create all of this alone.””

Marcus listened carefully.

For the first time all day, he saw something different in Brielle’s face.

Not just fear.

Guilt.

Deep guilt.

Caleb walked closer.

“My sister spent years protecting me.””

Brielle whispered.

“Caleb, please.””

He shook his head.

“No more.””

He looked at Marcus.

“She paid my debts.””

Marcus frowned.

“Your debts?””

Caleb nodded.

“I made bad investments. I trusted the wrong people. I lost everything.””

Tasha crossed her arms.

“And then you dragged her into it.””

Caleb looked at her.

“I know.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Caleb looked down.

“Because she thought you would see her differently.””

Marcus gave a bitter smile.

“That seems to be the theme today.””

Brielle stepped forward.

“Marcus, I never planned to hurt you.””

He looked at her.

“But you planned to use my name.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

She continued quietly.

“I thought if people believed I was connected to you, I could fix everything before you found out.””

Marcus stared.

“You used my reputation.””

“I was desperate.””

“That doesn’t make it right.””

“I know.””

The garden became quiet.

For the first time, Brielle wasn’t fighting.

She wasn’t blaming anyone.

She was admitting.

And somehow, that hurt Marcus more.

Caleb looked at him.

“She didn’t tell you because she was ashamed.””

Marcus looked at him.

“She should have trusted me enough to tell me.””

Caleb nodded.

“She should have.””

Brielle looked at her brother.

“You promised me you wouldn’t come.””

Caleb sighed.

“I promised a lot of things.””

A pause.

“And I broke most of them.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why did you really come today?””

Caleb looked at him.

“You already know.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Marcus noticed.

“You two know each other?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Another secret.

Another connection.

Marcus almost laughed.

“How many people from her past are standing here?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Caleb.

“You told me she was going to tell him.””

Caleb looked away.

“I thought she would.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“Wait.””

He looked at Daniel.

“You knew she was hiding this?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I knew she was struggling.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I suspected.””

Marcus felt betrayed again.

“You all suspected.””

His voice rose.

“And nobody thought I deserved to know?””

Evelyn stepped beside him.

“Marcus.””

“No, Mom.””

He shook his head.

“I spent today thinking I was marrying someone.””

He looked at Brielle.

“But I was apparently the last person invited to the truth.””

Brielle began crying.

“I love you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I believe you.””

Everyone was surprised.

Even Brielle.

Then he continued:

“But love doesn’t mean I ignore what happened.””

She looked broken.

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Again.

This time, nobody moved.

Marcus looked at the guests.

“Who is it?””

No one answered.

The phone continued ringing.

Then Caleb reached into his pocket.

The garden went silent.

Marcus stared.

“Is that yours?””

Caleb looked at the phone.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Marcus noticed.

“Answer it.””

Caleb didn’t move.

“Answer it.””

Slowly, Caleb pressed the button.

He put it on speaker.

A man’s voice came through.

“Did you tell him?””

Caleb closed his eyes.

Marcus felt a chill.

The voice continued.

“Because if Marcus knows everything, we all have a problem.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who is that?””

Silence.

Then the voice said:

“Brielle?””

Everyone looked at her.

May you like

Because the person on the phone wasn’t asking about Caleb.

They were asking for her.
