Chapter 3: The Name Nobody Expected

The phone continued ringing.

No one answered.

The sound echoed through the garden like a warning.

Marcus stood completely still.

“Whose phone is that?””

Nobody spoke.

The guests looked at one another, suddenly uncomfortable. The celebration had transformed into something else. It no longer felt like a wedding.

It felt like an investigation.

Brielle whispered, “Please turn it off.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

She didn’t respond.

That was the moment he understood.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t surprised.

She was terrified.

Evelyn stepped beside Marcus.

“Open the second document.””

Marcus looked at the paper in his hand.

Then at Brielle.

Then back at his mother.

Slowly, he unfolded it.

The paper contained another official record.

A name.

A date.

A signature.

His eyes moved across the page.

“What is this?””

Brielle covered her mouth.

“Marcus…”

“No,” he said.

His voice shook.

“No, don’t say my name like that.””

She stepped closer.

“I can explain.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Marcus looked around the wedding.

“At what point does someone tell me the truth?””

The ringing phone finally stopped.

A heavy silence replaced it.

Evelyn spoke softly.

“The person who gave me that envelope told me something else.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“She said Brielle wasn’t planning to tell you until after the wedding.””

Brielle’s eyes flashed with anger.

“That’s not true!””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Then why did you tell him you had never been married?””

Brielle had no answer.

Marcus stepped away.

The man who had been smiling only minutes before looked completely lost.

He stared at the flowers around him.

The wedding arch.

The chairs.

The table waiting for their signatures.

Everything he had planned.

Everything he believed.

Gone.

“Who is he?”” Marcus asked.

Brielle shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She lowered her voice.

“He wasn’t supposed to come here.””

The sentence made everyone freeze.

Marcus looked at her.

“Come here?””

Brielle realized what she had said.

Too late.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew he might come.””

“No,” Brielle said quickly.

But her expression betrayed her.

Marcus looked toward the guests again.

Every person became a possibility.

Every face became a question.

A man standing near the flowers looked away.

A woman near the chairs whispered something to her husband.

Someone near the canopy slowly stepped backward.

Marcus noticed.

“Who is that?””

Brielle grabbed his arm.

“Marcus, don’t.””

He looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

“You’re not scared of losing me.””

She froze.

“You’re scared of me finding him.””

The guests watched silently.

Evelyn reached for the envelope.

“There is one more thing you need to see.””

Marcus took it.

Inside was a photograph.

He looked at it.

And his entire expression changed.

“What?””

Brielle whispered.

“No…”

Marcus held the photograph tighter.

“Why would someone send me this?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because they wanted you to know the truth before you said your vows.””

Marcus stared at the image.

The garden around him blurred.

The flowers.

The guests.

The wedding decorations.

All of it disappeared behind one impossible question.

Then, from somewhere behind the crowd, a man’s voice spoke.

“Brielle.””

Her body went completely still.

Marcus slowly lifted his head.

Every guest turned toward the sound.

Brielle closed her eyes.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who had spoken.

And Marcus was about to meet the person who had been missing from her entire story.
