Chapter 2: The Bride Who Knew Too Much

Five minutes earlier, the wedding had looked perfect.

The garden lawn was covered with rows of white chairs. Pink-and-white flowers climbed across the arch where Marcus and Brielle were supposed to exchange vows. Wooden decorative crates held arrangements of roses and candles. The marriage table sat beneath the canopy, waiting for signatures that were supposed to begin a new chapter.

Evelyn had watched her son smile all morning.

That was what made the decision so painful.

Marcus had spent years believing he had finally found someone who loved him the way he deserved.

He had no idea the woman standing beside him was carrying a secret.

Now he stood in the middle of the same garden, holding a marriage record that felt heavier than anything he had ever held.

“Mom,” Marcus said slowly, “tell me this is fake.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I wish it was.””

Brielle immediately stepped closer.

“Marcus, she’s lying.””

Her voice was stronger now, but her hands were shaking.

Evelyn noticed.

“You said that very quickly.””

Brielle turned toward her.

“You’ve hated me from the beginning.””

Evelyn gave a small, humorless laugh.

“No. I didn’t hate you.””

She pointed toward the document.

“I hated what you were hiding.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Stop talking around me. I need answers.””

Brielle grabbed his hand.

“Marcus, listen to me. There’s an explanation.””

“What explanation?”” he asked.

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence answered more than words could.

The guests watched every movement. Some whispered behind their hands. Others looked uncomfortable, wishing they could disappear from the scene.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You told me everything about your life.””

Brielle’s eyes softened.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

“That you would leave.””

The honesty almost broke through his anger.

Almost.

Marcus looked at the marriage record again.

“Who was he?””

Brielle looked away.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“That’s the question she hoped you would never ask.””

Brielle’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell it,” Marcus said.

The silence stretched.

Evelyn watched Brielle carefully.

She had known this moment would come.

For weeks, she had carried the envelope in her purse. Every morning, she told herself she would throw it away. Every night, she remembered the phone call that brought the truth to her doorstep.

A woman had called her.

A woman who knew Marcus’s wedding date.

A woman who knew exactly what Brielle had done.

“Marcus,” Evelyn said, “I didn’t find this because I was searching through her things.””

Brielle looked at her.

“Then how?””

Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.

She looked toward the crowd.

“Because someone wanted me to know.””

Marcus followed her eyes.

“What does that mean?””

Before Evelyn could respond, a guest near the back shifted nervously.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But Brielle saw it.

Her face went pale again.

Marcus noticed.

“Who are you looking at?””

“No one,” Brielle said.

Too quickly.

Marcus turned.

“Brielle.””

She grabbed his sleeve.

“Please. Not here.””

He pulled his arm away.

“Not here? You mean my wedding isn’t the right place to find out my fiancée has another husband?””

The words cut through the garden.

Evelyn looked down at the document.

“There’s more.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What more?””

She reached into the envelope again.

Brielle stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone heard it.

A single word.

A desperate warning.

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

“You knew there was more?””

Brielle said nothing.

Evelyn removed a second folded paper.

This one was smaller.

Marcus reached for it.

But before he could open it, Brielle moved between them.

“Marcus, if you read that, everything changes.””

The guests went silent.

Marcus stared at the woman he was supposed to marry.

“What are you afraid I’ll find?””

Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.

And then a phone somewhere among the guests began ringing.

Everyone looked around.

May you like

Brielle’s face drained of color.

Because she recognized the ringtone.
