Chapter 5: The Truth She Buried
Marcus stared at the photograph in Daniel’s hand.
He didn’t take it immediately.
Some part of him didn’t want to.
Because deep down, he already knew.
Every answer he received seemed to create another question.
Daniel held the photograph out.
“Look.””
Marcus slowly accepted it.
The image showed Brielle.
Years younger.
Standing beside Daniel.
Wearing a wedding dress.
Not the one she wore today.
Another one.
Another day.
Another marriage.
Marcus looked at the picture.
Then at Brielle.
She looked away.
That was enough.
“Why?”” he whispered.
Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.
“Marcus…”
“Why did you let me believe this was my first chance at forever?””
Her face tightened.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“The past.””
Brielle turned toward him.
“You don’t get to act innocent.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I never said I was.””
That surprised everyone.
Even Marcus.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I made mistakes.””
He looked at Brielle.
“We both did.””
For the first time, Brielle looked less angry and more desperate.
“Marcus, please understand. Daniel and I were over.””
“But you were still married.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty finally came.
But it arrived too late.
Marcus looked away.
Guests shifted uncomfortably.
Some quietly left the seating area, unsure whether they should stay.
Others remained because they needed to know how the story ended.
Evelyn watched her son carefully.
She knew this was hurting him.
But she also knew a painful truth was better than a beautiful lie.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“How long?””
Daniel answered.
“Seven years.””
Marcus looked back at Brielle.
“Seven years?””
She wiped her eyes.
“It wasn’t simple.””
“Marriage isn’t simple,” Marcus said.
His voice was quiet.
“That’s the point.””
Brielle stepped closer.
“Marcus, I was young. I was scared. I made choices I regret.””
“Then why hide them?””
She looked down.
“Because I knew you would see me differently.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“And you were right.””
The words broke something in her expression.
Daniel watched silently.
Then Marcus noticed something.
The way Daniel looked at Brielle.
There was anger.
But there was also pain.
A person who had once loved her.
A person who had been hurt.
Marcus looked at him.
“What did you mean when you said she left because you found out what she did?””
Daniel became quiet.
Brielle immediately interrupted.
“That’s not relevant.””
Marcus looked at her.
“If it wasn’t relevant, you wouldn’t be stopping him.””
Daniel pulled another document from the envelope.
This time, Brielle’s fear was obvious.
“No.””
Marcus noticed.
“What is that?””
Daniel looked at the paper.
“This is why I came.””
He handed it to Marcus.
Marcus read the first few lines.
His eyebrows lowered.
Then his face changed.
“What is this?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He looked at Brielle.
“You told me you had no contact with him.””
Brielle said nothing.
“Marcus…”
“You told me you hadn’t spoken to him in years.””
She looked terrified.
“I didn’t mean—”
“But this says you contacted him three months ago.””
Silence.
The kind of silence that made everyone uncomfortable.
Daniel nodded.
“She reached out to me.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Brielle.
“Because she needed something.””
Brielle’s eyes flashed.
“Don’t.””
Daniel continued.
“She wanted me to sign something.””
Marcus looked at the document again.
“What?””
Daniel took a breath.
“A divorce agreement.””
Hope flickered across Marcus’s face.
“Then why didn’t you sign it?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Because I discovered what she was really trying to do.””
Brielle stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What were you trying to do?””
She looked around.
At the guests.
At the wedding decorations.
At the life she had built.
Then back at Marcus.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Brielle stared at him.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“You were trying to protect the lie.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone looked around.
This time, Marcus noticed exactly where the sound came from.
A guest standing near the flower crates.
A guest who had been silent the entire time.
The guest looked down at the screen.
Then quickly turned away.
Marcus walked toward him.
“Who are you?””
The man didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Why were you recording this?””
The guest looked up.
And smiled nervously.
“I think you should ask your bride why she invited me.””
Brielle’s face went pale.
Marcus stopped.
Because he suddenly realized something.

The mystery wasn’t only about the husband she hid.
It was about who else knew the truth.
