Chapter 8: The Wedding Gift Nobody Expected
Nobody moved.
The question remained hanging above the garden.
Why was Marcus’s money scheduled to move the day after the wedding?
Brielle looked around.
The same people who had come to celebrate her were now watching her like a stranger.
She took a slow breath.
“It’s not what you think.””
Marcus stared at her.
“That’s becoming your favorite sentence.””
Her face fell.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“After we were married.””
Marcus gave a quiet, painful laugh.
“So after I couldn’t walk away?””
Brielle flinched.
“That’s not fair.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“What isn’t fair is my son standing here discovering his future was already being decided without him.””
Brielle turned toward her.
“You never liked me.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“This has nothing to do with liking you.””
She pointed toward the documents.
“This is about honesty.””
Daniel remained silent.
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew about the debt?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know who to believe.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Brielle.
“Because every time I tried to help her, she told me she was fixing things.””
Brielle crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like I’m some kind of criminal.””
“No,” Daniel said quietly.
“I’m acting like someone who watched you make one bad choice after another because admitting the truth became harder than hiding it.””
That sentence hit her.
Marcus noticed.
There was history there.
Painful history.
Not just anger.
“What kind of debt?”” Marcus asked.
Brielle looked away.
“Business debt.””
Marcus waited.
“That’s all?””
She hesitated.
“No.””
He nodded slowly.
“Of course not.””
Andre stepped forward.
“She was being sued.””
Marcus looked at him.
“For what?””
Andre glanced at Brielle.
“For fraud.””
The guests gasped.
Brielle immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Andre looked at her.
“You know it’s true.””
“No. It was a misunderstanding.””
Marcus looked exhausted.
“Everyone has a different version of your life.””
He looked at Brielle.
“I’m the only person who knew none of them.””
Brielle’s eyes filled.
“Marcus, please.””
She reached for his hand.
He stepped back.
That movement hurt her.
Not because he rejected her.
Because she finally understood she had lost control.
The man who always believed her was questioning everything.
Evelyn watched quietly.
Then she said:
“There’s another reason I came today.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
Again.
Another envelope.
This time smaller.
“I didn’t want to show you this unless I had to.””
Brielle’s face changed.
“What is that?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“You know.””
Brielle went completely still.
Marcus noticed.
“What is it?””
Evelyn opened the envelope.
Inside was a printed message.
A conversation.
Marcus read the first line.
His eyes narrowed.
The message was from Brielle.
Sent months earlier.
Before the engagement.
Before the wedding plans.
The words were short.
But devastating.
“I need him to trust me before I ask.””
Marcus stopped reading.
His face became empty.
Brielle whispered:
“Marcus…”
He looked up.
“Ask me what?””
No answer.
The guests stared.
Brielle’s voice trembled.
“I was going to tell you.””
“What were you going to ask?””
She looked down.
Evelyn handed him the phone records attached to the message.
Marcus read further.
There were more conversations.
More dates.
More plans.
His hands tightened around the paper.
“You planned this.””
“No.””
“You planned how to get close to me.””
“No.””
“You wrote that you needed me to trust you before you asked.””
Brielle cried.
“I was desperate.””
Marcus looked at her.
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel quietly said:
“There’s something else.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What now?””
Daniel pointed toward the document.
“The account transfer.””
Marcus looked down.
Daniel continued.
“That wasn’t for her debt.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then what was it for?””
Daniel looked at Brielle.
She didn’t speak.
Daniel answered.
“It was to pay someone.””
Marcus felt a cold wave move through him.
“Who?””
Brielle whispered:
“Marcus…”
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the guests.
Toward the people standing around the wedding.
Then he said:
“The person who threatened to expose her.””
Everyone followed his eyes.
Marcus slowly turned.
Because suddenly the stranger at the wedding wasn’t the only mystery.
Someone else had been watching.
May you like
Someone else had been waiting.
And that person was still standing among them.
