Chapter 12: The Beginning of the Lie

Marcus didn’t move.

The sentence replayed in his mind.

Before you ever met.

Before the first date.

Before the first conversation.

Before he believed any of this was real.

He looked at Brielle.

“Is that true?””

She cried silently.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped back.

“How long?””

Brielle whispered.

“Marcus…”

“How long did you know who I was?””

She looked down.

“A few months.””

The answer landed like a physical blow.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel looked away.

Even Caleb seemed ashamed.

Marcus stared.

“A few months?””

Brielle nodded.

“I didn’t know you personally.””

“But you knew of me.””

“Yes.””

“And you approached me.””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked around.

The wedding guests.

The flowers.

The life he thought he had built.

Everything felt like a performance.

“Was any of it real?””

Brielle immediately looked up.

“Yes.””

Her answer was desperate.

“Marcus, yes.””

He looked at her.

“How am I supposed to know?””

She cried.

“Because I fell in love with you.””

He shook his head.

“You fell in love after you already decided I could save you.””

Brielle looked broken.

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

He held up the documents.

“My mother brought legal records.””

Daniel brought proof of your marriage.

Tasha brought evidence from your past.

Your brother admitted he dragged me into your problems.

And now some man on a phone says you found me before I found you.””

He looked at her.

“Tell me which part is fair.””

Brielle had no answer.

Caleb stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

He looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus stared.

“For what?””

“For letting my sister believe she could keep running.””

Caleb looked at Brielle.

“She should have told you.””

Brielle wiped her tears.

“I was afraid.””

Caleb nodded.

“I know.””

A pause.

“But fear doesn’t excuse everything.””

That was the first time anyone had said it to her.

Even she seemed to understand.

Victor’s voice returned.

“You’re all wasting time.””

Marcus picked up the phone.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

Victor laughed.

“You think I owe you answers?””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I think Brielle deserves the chance to stop being controlled by you.””

Silence.

Then Victor said:

“You really don’t know what kind of person you married.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“I know.””

Victor continued.

“You married someone who built a relationship on a lie.””

Marcus tightened his jaw.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“But I want to know why.””

For the first time, Victor became quiet.

Then he said:

“Because she needed access.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“Access to what?””

Victor answered:

“To you.””

The garden went silent.

Brielle whispered:

“No.””

Victor continued.

“She needed your trust.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Why?””

No answer.

Victor said:

“Because your company was the only thing standing between her and prison.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Evelyn looked shocked.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Prison?””

Brielle shook her head.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

He looked at her.

“Were you using me to cover something illegal?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

But this time, she looked desperate.

Not convincing.

Victor laughed.

“She still thinks she can fix everything with words.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“What did she do?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Ask her about the account she opened.””

Marcus frowned.

“What account?””

Brielle went completely still.

Marcus noticed.

Again.

Another reaction.

Another secret.

“Brielle.””

She looked at him.

“I can explain.””

He closed his eyes.

“No.””

A painful silence.

“Not explain.””

He opened them.

“Tell.””

Brielle’s hands shook.

“I opened an account.””

“For what?””

She looked at the ground.

“For money.””

“How much?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“Five hundred thousand dollars.””

The guests gasped.

Marcus stared.

“From where?””

Brielle looked up.

And the fear returned.

“From your company.””

Nobody spoke.

The wedding arch stood behind them.

Beautiful.

Perfect.

Completely untouched by the disaster beneath it.

Then Marcus’s phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

He pulled it out.

A new message appeared.

From his bank.

A transaction alert.

His face changed as he read it.

Because the transaction wasn’t pending anymore.

It had been completed.

And the recipient’s name was not Brielle.

May you like

It was someone else.

Someone standing at the wedding.
