Chapter 10: The Child Behind the Lie
The question hung over the empty ballroom.
“If I had a child…”
Nia’s voice shook.
“Then whose baby is she carrying now?””
Nobody answered.
Not immediately.
And that silence was more painful than any confession.
Nia looked at Adrian.
She had spent years believing silence meant nothing.
A busy husband.
A difficult conversation.
A moment when someone didn’t know what to say.
But tonight, she understood.
Sometimes silence was the loudest confession.
“Adrian.””
He looked at her.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I don’t know how to explain this.””
Nia stared at him.
“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said.””
He flinched.
The words landed exactly where she wanted them to.
Because she didn’t want his apology.
Not yet.
She wanted the truth.
All of it.
Dr. Brooks picked up the birth record from the table.
“The baby you carried was born.””
Nia looked at the document again.
Her fingers trembled.
“But I don’t remember.””
The doctor nodded.
“I know.””
“Why?””
Nobody moved.
“Why don’t I remember my own child?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Evelyn looked away.
And that was when Nia realized.
They all knew.
They had all been living with this secret while she lived inside a lie.
Dr. Brooks spoke carefully.
“After the accident, your brain experienced trauma. The doctors believed the memory loss might be temporary.””
Nia swallowed.
“Might be?””
“Yes.””
“And the baby?””
The doctor looked at Adrian.
“He was born while you were still recovering.””
Nia’s heart stopped.
“He?””
Adrian looked down.
“A son.””
The word destroyed her.
A son.
A child.
A person who existed.
A life she should have known.
A face she should have memorized.
A voice she should have heard.
Instead, she had woken up and been told only that she was lucky to be alive.
Nia covered her mouth.
A quiet sob escaped.
Not because she was weak.
Because something inside her was breaking open.
“What happened to him?””
Nobody answered.
The delay terrified her.
“What happened?””
Adrian finally spoke.
“He was taken to another hospital.””
“Why?””
“Because of complications.””
“What complications?””
His silence returned.
Nia looked at him.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not again.””
“Nia…”
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to decide which parts of my life I can handle anymore.””
Adrian looked devastated.
“He needed medical care.””
“And?””
“And there were people who wanted to use him.””
Nia froze.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked down.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Dr. Brooks sighed.
“It means your son became connected to a legal and medical dispute.””
Nia stared.
“My son was a dispute?””
“No,” Adrian said quickly.
“He was never that.””
“Then what was he?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“He was the most important thing in my life.””
Nia looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
He had no answer.
That was the worst part.
No answer.
Just guilt.
The man who always had a reason suddenly had none.
Vanessa slowly sat down.
Her confidence was completely gone.
“I didn’t know about the baby at first.””
Nia looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“When Adrian and I started seeing each other, he told me your marriage was already over.””
Nia closed her eyes.
Another lie.
“He told me you couldn’t have children.””
Adrian looked ashamed.
Vanessa continued.
“I found out about the clinic later.””
“Then why stay?””
Vanessa looked at her stomach.
“Because by then I was already pregnant.””
Nia stared.
“But you knew the baby might be connected to my child?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Not because it was surprising.
Because it was true.
Nia walked toward the table and placed the birth record down.
“Where is my son?””
Adrian’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“I can’t tell you.””
The room froze.
Nia slowly turned.
“What?””
Adrian looked at her.
“Because if you know—”
She interrupted him.
“If I know what?””
He couldn’t finish.
Dr. Brooks looked at Adrian.
“You have to tell her.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Adrian.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“I already lost her once.””
Nia stared.
“You lost me because you lied.””
The words cut through him.
Before he could answer, the doors opened.
A woman walked inside.
Older.
Elegant.
Holding a folder.
She looked directly at Nia.
“I’m sorry I’m late.””
Nobody spoke.
Adrian stepped back.
His face turned pale.
“No.””
The woman looked at him.
“You knew this day would come.””
Nia looked between them.
“Who is she?””
The woman walked closer.
“My name is Celeste Carter.””
She looked at the folder.
“And I’m the person who has been protecting your son for the last three years.””
Nia stopped breathing.
Her son.
The words she had waited years to hear.
The words that should have been impossible.
“Where is he?””
Celeste looked at Adrian.
May you like
Then at Nia.
“He’s closer than you think.””
