Chapter 7: The Memory She Lost
The woman standing in the ballroom doorway looked nothing like the people who had spent the last few hours tearing Nia’s life apart.
She wasn’t dressed for the gala.
She wore a simple gray coat over professional clothing, her hair pulled back neatly, a thick file held tightly against her chest.
She looked nervous.
Not smug.
Not confident.
Afraid.
Nia stared at her.
“Who are you?””
The woman took a slow breath.
“My name is Dr. Camille Brooks.””
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
The doctor looked at him.
“You knew this day would come.””
His face hardened.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Nia’s eyes moved between them.
“You know her?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Nia looked at Dr. Brooks.
“Why are you here?””
The doctor’s fingers tightened around the file.
“Because you deserve to know what happened three years ago.””
The words echoed.
Three years ago.
Again.
That same year.
That same secret.
Nia felt something cold move through her.
She looked at Adrian.
“What happened?””
Adrian’s voice became sharp.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Nia turned.
“Why?””
“Because she’s only telling part of the story.””
Dr. Brooks nodded slowly.
“He’s right.””
Everyone looked at her.
“I am only telling part of it.””
She stepped into the ballroom.
“Because the other part is something Nia has to remember herself.””
Nia frowned.
“Remember?””
The doctor looked at her carefully.
“Yes.””
A silence fell.
Nia felt her stomach tighten.
“I don’t understand.””
Dr. Brooks placed the file on the nearest table.
“Three years ago, you were involved in a car accident.””
Nia froze.
She remembered the accident.
Barely.
Fragments.
Rain.
Headlights.
A hospital ceiling.
Adrian crying beside her bed.
But nothing after that.
The doctors said trauma could affect memory.
Everyone told her not to force herself to remember.
She had accepted that.
Or at least she thought she had.
“What does this have to do with tonight?””
Dr. Brooks looked at Adrian.
“Everything.””
Nia’s eyes followed hers.
Adrian looked away.
That was the first time she saw something she had never seen before.
Guilt.
Not the guilt of a cheating husband.
Something deeper.
Something older.
“What did you do?”” Nia whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
“I saved your life.””
The answer came immediately.
And for a second, Nia almost believed him.
Then Dr. Brooks spoke.
“He did.””
She paused.
“But he also made a decision afterward.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“Camille.””
The doctor ignored him.
“A decision that affected both of you.””
Nia looked at the file.
“Open it.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because you’re not ready.””
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they sounded like something someone would say when they had been deciding what she was allowed to know.
Nia walked toward the table.
“I’m tired of people deciding what I can handle.””
She opened the file.
The first document was a hospital report.
Her name.
Her date of birth.
The accident date.
Then another section.
She stopped.
Her eyes moved across the page.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
She looked up.
“Why does this say I was pregnant?””
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Adrian looked like he had been punched.
Nia stared at the paper.
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Dr. Brooks stepped closer.
“Nia…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I would remember that.””
The doctor’s expression softened.
“That is the problem.””
Nia looked at her.
“What?””
“You don’t remember.””
The ballroom seemed to spin.
She looked at Adrian.
“You knew?””
He didn’t answer.
That was all she needed.
“You knew.””
“Nia—”
“You knew?””
Her voice cracked.
“You knew I was pregnant?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Yes.””
The honesty destroyed her more than another lie would have.
“How long?””
“Before the accident.””
Nia stepped back.
Vanessa looked away.
Evelyn looked devastated.
Nia’s mind raced through memories.
The accident.
The hospital.
The months afterward.
Adrian telling her she was lucky to be alive.
Adrian telling her not to worry about children anymore.
Adrian telling her they could start over.
But there was something missing.
Something huge.
“What happened?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Dr. Brooks answered.
“You lost the pregnancy.””
Nia closed her eyes.
The words hurt.
But they also felt strangely familiar.
Like a door inside her mind had opened slightly.
She saw flashes.
A hospital room.
A tiny blanket.
Adrian holding her hand.
Crying.
But then another memory came.
A conversation.
A voice.
Adrian saying:
“She can never know.””
Nia opened her eyes.
“What did you say?””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
She stared at him.
“I heard you.””
His face went pale.
“When?””
“You said…”
She touched her temple.
“You said I could never know.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Nia.””
“Did you say that?””
He didn’t answer.
Dr. Brooks looked at him.
“You did.””
Nia felt something break inside her.
“What was I not supposed to know?””
Adrian looked at the floor.
And for the first time in ten years of marriage, Nia saw her husband with no mask.
No confidence.
No control.
Only regret.
“I was afraid you would leave me.””
The answer was quiet.
Nia laughed painfully.
“You were afraid I would leave you?””
A tear finally fell.
“So you let me live in a lie?””
Adrian opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Because there was no defense.
Dr. Brooks looked at the ultrasound photo sitting on the table.
Then at Vanessa.
“Nia needs to know one more thing.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
The doctor looked at her.
“It’s time.””
Nia turned.
“One more thing?””
Dr. Brooks nodded.
“The pregnancy Vanessa is carrying…”
She paused.
“It connects to what happened three years ago.””
Nobody moved.
Nia looked at Vanessa.
Then Adrian.
May you like
And suddenly, the question from the beginning of the night returned.
Whose baby was she carrying?
