Chapter 13: The Witness Who Stayed Silent
“I was.””
The words settled over the ballroom like a storm.
Nia stared at the woman standing in the doorway.
Rachel.
A stranger.
Yet somehow, the person who knew more about her life than she did.
Adrian moved immediately.
“Rachel, don’t.””
The woman looked at him.
For the first time all night, someone looked at Adrian without fear.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
Nia watched Adrian’s face.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
He knew exactly who Rachel was.
“How long have you known she was alive?”” Nia asked.
Adrian looked at her.
“Nia…”
“How long?””
He said nothing.
Rachel answered.
“He knew three years ago.””
The answer felt like another wound.
Nia looked at Adrian.
“You knew she existed.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“No.””
The honesty hurt.
But Nia was beyond shock now.
She had spent the night discovering pieces of a life that belonged to her but somehow existed without her.
Rachel walked farther into the ballroom.
She looked at the photo of Noah on the table.
Then at Nia.
“I’m sorry.””
Nia shook her head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Rachel stopped.
“But nobody tells me why.””
The woman nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
She took a breath.
“So I’ll tell you everything.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Rachel.””
She ignored him.
“Three years ago, I worked at the hospital where Nia was treated after the accident.””
Nia listened carefully.
“I wasn’t her doctor. I was a nurse assigned to her floor.””
She looked down.
“I remember that night because nobody in that hospital ever forgot it.””
Nia frowned.
“What happened?””
Rachel looked at Adrian.
“He arrived before anyone else.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“He was terrified.””
Nia looked at him.
Rachel continued.
“He kept asking if you were alive.””
A painful memory appeared in Nia’s mind.
Adrian sitting beside her.
Holding her hand.
Crying.
For a moment, she almost softened.
Then Rachel continued.
“But then someone else arrived.””
The room went quiet.
“Who?””
Rachel looked toward the door.
“No one knows her by name.””
Nia frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She paid someone at the hospital to access Nia’s records.””
Adrian’s face changed.
Nia noticed.
“You knew.””
He didn’t deny it.
Rachel continued.
“She was looking for information about the baby.””
Nia felt cold.
“The baby?””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked at the photo.
“Noah.””
The name sounded different now.
Like a secret finally being spoken aloud.
“Why would someone want information about my baby?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel looked at Adrian.
“Because she believed Noah was the key to proving what happened.””
Nia looked between them.
“What happened?””
Rachel swallowed.
“The accident wasn’t random.””
Silence.
The words felt impossible.
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Rachel nodded sadly.
“Yes.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Nia turned toward him.
“You knew?””
His silence answered.
“You knew my accident wasn’t an accident?””
Adrian whispered:
“Yes.””
The pain on his face was real.
But Nia couldn’t let that save him.
“You let me believe I was unlucky.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
He looked at Rachel.
Rachel answered.
“From the person who caused it.””
Nia looked at her.
“Who?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then looked toward Evelyn.
Everyone followed her gaze.
Evelyn went completely still.
Nia’s stomach dropped.
“No.””
Rachel spoke softly.
“It wasn’t Adrian.””
Nia looked at him.
For the first time, that sentence didn’t make things better.
Because there was someone else.
Someone closer.
Someone who had been standing beside her all night.
“Evelyn?””
The older woman’s face changed.
“Nia.””
But Nia stepped away.
“No.””
Rachel shook her head.
“She didn’t cause the accident.””
Everyone froze.
Nia looked confused.
“Then why are you looking at her?””
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“Because she knows who did.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
And Nia knew.
The truth had finally reached the person who had spent the entire night controlling the room.
“You knew.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“I was trying to protect my son.””
Nia laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
Nia’s voice was cold.
“You made choices.””
The older woman looked down.
Rachel stepped closer.
“There’s one more thing.””
Nia looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel opened her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“This was recovered from the hospital records.””
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“Rachel.””
But she handed it to Nia.
“She needs to see it.””
Nia opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A security image.
A hospital hallway.
Three years ago.
A person standing outside Nia’s room.
Nia stared.
Because she recognized the clothing.
The posture.
The familiar silhouette.
She looked up slowly.
“That’s…”
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Nia’s voice disappeared.
Because the person in the photograph was someone she trusted.
Someone who had hugged her.
Someone who had cried beside her hospital bed.
Someone who had spent three years pretending to protect her.
Evelyn whispered:
“Nia, please.””
But it was too late.
May you like
Nia already knew.
The secret had finally found its way home.
