Chapter 12: The Choice Between Truth and Family

The photograph shook in Nia’s hands.

A child’s handwriting.

A child’s understanding.

A child who knew her only as a picture.

Not a voice.

Not a touch.

Not a mother.

Nia closed her eyes.

For three years, she had wondered why something inside her felt missing.

Why certain birthdays made her sad for reasons she couldn’t explain.

Why she sometimes woke up crying from dreams she couldn’t remember.

Maybe her heart knew before her mind did.

Maybe some part of her had always been searching.

“Where is Noah?””

Celeste looked at Adrian.

He hesitated.

Nia noticed.

Again.

Always hesitation.

Always another wall.

“Answer me.””

Adrian looked at her.

“He’s safe.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

His shoulders dropped.

“He’s with my sister.””

Nia frowned.

“Your sister?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian looked ashamed.

“Because after the accident, I thought it was the safest place.””

Nia stared.

“You sent my son away.””

“I visited him every day.””

“But I didn’t.””

The sentence broke him.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Nia turned toward Celeste.

“I want to see him.””

Celeste nodded.

“You will.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“But not tonight.””

Nia looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because there are still things you don’t know.””

She laughed quietly.

“I’m beginning to think there will always be things I don’t know.””

Adrian looked at the floor.

“There is one more secret.””

Everyone became still.

Nia stared.

“What now?””

Adrian reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

The same type of envelope that had started everything.

“I received this three years ago.””

Nia didn’t move.

“What is it?””

He handed it to her.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Not medical.

Personal.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

She read the first line.

*Adrian, if you tell Nia the truth, Noah will not be the only person you lose.*

Nia looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

Adrian said nothing.

She kept reading.

The letter continued.

*You know what happened that night. You know why the accident occurred.*

Her heart stopped.

“What night?””

Adrian looked away.

Nia looked at him.

“You said this was an accident.””

“It was.””

“Then why does this say someone knows what happened?””

Nobody spoke.

Celeste looked concerned.

Dr. Brooks looked at Adrian.

“You never told her?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Nia felt anger rising again.

“Of course you didn’t.””

“Nia.””

“No.””

She held up the letter.

“You didn’t just hide my son.””

Her voice trembled.

“You hid the reason I lost him.””

Adrian’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“And who was protecting me from you?””

That sentence silenced him.

Even Evelyn looked away.

Because everyone knew.

Nia had finally said what they all feared.

Adrian wasn’t just hiding a secret.

He was controlling the truth.

The ballroom doors opened slightly.

A staff member appeared.

“Mr. Cole?””

Everyone turned.

The employee looked nervous.

“There is someone asking for Nia.””

Adrian immediately stiffened.

“Who?””

The employee looked at Nia.

“She said you would recognize her.””

Nia frowned.

“I don’t know anyone here.””

The employee hesitated.

“She said her name is Rachel.””

Adrian froze.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

Nia saw it.

“Who is Rachel?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

His face had gone pale again.

Evelyn whispered:

“No…”

Nia looked at everyone.

“Who is Rachel?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian finally said:

“She was there the night of the accident.””

The room became silent.

Nia felt her heartbeat pounding.

“What does she know?””

Adrian looked toward the door.

And for the first time that night, he looked more afraid of someone else than he was of losing everything.

“She knows who caused it.””

The door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

She looked directly at Nia.

“I’m sorry it took me three years to find you.””

Nia stared.

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“But Adrian never told you the truth.””

A pause.

“He wasn’t the one who saved your life.””

Everyone froze.

May you like

The woman looked at Nia.

“I was.””
